I'll be leaving on a ride from Tucson, AZ to Tacoma, WA in mid August. The route there will be via the coast highway through CA, OR, and WA. However, after leaving Tacoma I would like to follow the Columbia River from around Stevenson, WA and on East.
Any suggestions on a good scenic route to that point, or any other suggestions for that matter as to road conditions, weather, riding gear, etc.
When looking over the map, one route I was considering was to take rt. 7 down to Morton, pick up rt. 25 to 51 and South to the river. Never been in that part of the country, so any info on riders that have been through there would be appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks for your info and the heads up on gas! Looks like that may be a scenic way to the river, I'll make sure I have plenty of fuel before leaving Randle.
Going south on Rte 7 to Morton has some nice two-lane roadway through forested land/foothills of the Cascades. When you get down to the Columbia (by whatever route you choose), you can head on 14 to Biggs Jct on 97 and go through Bend (with a quick side trip to Crater Lake) through Klamath Falls into N Cal. After you join up to I-5, you can get off the slab again on 89 and go up/over Lassen Park and down toward Reno/Tahoe on 395. Continue on south on 395 and you'll head by Mammoth Lakes area. Lots of scenic roads in E CA/W Nevada on that route before picking your way to AZ.
I am going get in here westsiders suggestion is great except don't get on I5 go down 97 all the way to K Falls then get over to 395 until you get just outside of Alturas then go down through Adin into Susanville then into Reno and then I like 395 down into the southern CA area. 95 into Vegas is just BUTT UGLY but if you go down into SO CA you will prolly have to take the 10 home.
With your proposed route you can continue west past Stevenson a mile or so and take the Bridge of the Gods into Oregon at Cascade Locks. Then get on 84 east to a town called Mosier. Get off at that exit and follow 30 east to Rowena Point. It is an awesome ride and there is a great view at the top. Here are views http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isc...10l10l0.efis.1.
Once you leave the point follow 30 east to the Dalles and you can take 197 south or you can take 84 east to Biggs and get on 97 south. I would suggest a trip to Crater Lake if you have been there it is worth the trip. Leaving Crater Lake if you take 97 through Klamath Falls I might suggest following 97 to I5 south. It will bring you in at Weed, CA there is a hotel called the Siskiyou Inn that is nice. From there if you take 89 east towards Susanville you will drive right by Burney, CA and there is Burney Falls that is worth the stop. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&g...w=1024&bih=607
From there I would head to Reno and take 395 south from there.
Thanks everyone for all the excellent suggestions, looks like I have a lot of interesting options to consider. I'm wearing out my map marking each of the great routes, once I get down to the river I'll have a nice set of choices to make! Which one we take will depend on the amount of time we have left after whatever we burn up riding up the coast on hwy 1. Can't wait!!!

We did much of this route last September. Passed a lake on the Oregon/Ca. border that had lots of wildlife standing in lakebed feeding. Came through Susanville. Spent one night in Reno and the rates were very affordable($70) at a nice casino with good food. Driving down the east side of the Sierra Mountains(I think) was really an eye opener. Drove on down through Death Valley and spent the next night in Pahrump Nevada.

Yes, Lassen NP is definitely worth doing -- a great twisty ride!. I finally got there last September. Here are a couple of pictures. Note that the snow down to the side of the road at the summit is from the previous winter!
