A small group of us are coming from Texas to ride up PCH 1 from Oxnard to Salinas and then east to South Lake Tahoe and make our way back through Colorado, NM and back to Texas.
Looks like the only feasible way is to get to Oxnard is IH40 through Los Angles. Any advice? A better route?

No, there are ways around LA. CA 126 from Santa Clarita through Santa Paula is a throughback highway from the past. It is old Calif before spawl took over. You can get there by heading north on I-5 or better yet, go all the way around LA and come in from from Palmdale. Assuming you will hit San Bernadino, head north and west to Palmdale on CA138. You might want to head out on I-15 and hit 138 on the other side of El Cahon Pass. There is still the old road if you don't like LA freeways.

From Salinas, head over 152 to Los Banos and the Central Valley (bypassing the Bay Area). There are many great road over the Sierras. If you are heading to South Lake Tahoe, consider either CA 4 or CA 88 and then head over to Hiway 89 that will go to So Lake Tahoe. Both roads are less traveled with great scenery.

i live in los angeles (santa monica) and would say avoid it if at all possible. traffic is the worst. if you absolutely have to then timing is everything. the ideal way would be the 10 to the 210 (redlands) to 134 in pasadena to 101 then out to oxnard. i'd say, if you're starting that leg from redlands during the week then leave between 11a and noon and you should be able to slip between the morning and evening traffic. if you're leaving redlands on a saturday or sunday then 7am should beat the beach traffic, which starts picking up at about 10a - 11a from los angeles on the weekends.
