Going on a weekend trip in July. Part of the leg puts us running from St Louis to Joplin. I thought it would be cool to take all day to ride it and check out that section of Route 66. Any tips or must see places along the way? I've been looking into it some for maps and such but good info isn't easy to come by. Thought I'd throw it out here and see if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!
I travel this road quite a bit, the I-44 outer road is old 66. In most cases there is no clear signage and the roads are spotty at times. You will also be crossing over the highway a lot, it seems 44 was cut through the middle of this nice curvy road.
That said: it is a great ride and you will get to see a part of America you don't see from the interstate.
Enjoy the ride!

OP - You'll be seeing a LOT of I-44 from Rt 66 in MO as others have said. I've taken parts of it and there are still a few spots were you get away from the interstate and it feels like being back in the Good Ole days. Enjoy!
Other than the historical value of the old television show, Route 66 is actually very dull. One flea market to another through some of least scenic parts of Missouri. It literally is the frontage road along the interstate. Get away from the Waffle Houses and truck stops. Plenty of alternative routes in the same basic direction.
