I was in Creede for awhile today and the movie "Lone Ranger" is being filmed just north of town. The old mining town isn't the same this June with the movie being filmed throughout the month. I didn't see Johnny Depp, but lots of "Extras" running around. SJ Ron
SJ Ron....I just checked out one of those helmet cam videos of hwy. 149 & million dollar hwy.-looks like an awsome ride.Did'nt know about a Lone Ranger movie. I also did a mileage check from Denver to Gunnison then taking 149 to Durango up to Ridgway then 62 to 145 down to Cortez. If I leave Denver on Sunday I get to Gunnison (200M) that night. Monday-149 to Durango.Tuesday-550 to Ridgway then 62-145 to Cortez. Do you think this is to ambitious?
Gunni to Durango takes around 5 hours with a few short breaks -- so that is certainly doable. You may experience delays due to road construction around Wolf Creek Pass. No work currently on Slumgullion or Spring Creek Passes. If you leave early in the morning, watch for deer around Mile Markers 90-100. I see them frequently. I personally would leave early to get over Wolf Creek before the usual monsoon afternoon T-Storms hit (usually 1-2 in the afternoon).
Your next day also is certainly reasonable. Once again, I would depart early out of Durango to get over Coal Bank and Molas Passes and especially Red Mountain Pass before the T-Storms hit. I have hit snow in July riding and hiking in the Red Mtn. area. If you have the time, Handlebars restaurant in Silverton is great (if the Durango/Silverton train isn't dropping off hundreds of tourists). If so, have lunch in beautiful Ouray (Little Switzerland) or jump in the hot springs.
If you happen to be on the south side of Aurora you could take Parker Road which turns into highway 83 east of I25. Nice ride through the Black Forest to Colorado Springs and then catch 24. This would avoid the hassle of south Denver to hook up to 285.
A BIG THANKS to RJ Ron,Sfarson,Rockymtnrider & Davey for all your help. I'll be in the area between the 13th. & 15th. of August so if you happen to see a black Night Train with a Wisc. plate, pull up & I'll buy you a beer or two. From Colorado I'll be heading west to Carlsbad,Ca. to visit more friends then up to Yosemite before heading back home in a round about way. All told I have 1 month vacation time for this trip. Thanks again.....Al
Just for a preview, the Windy Point Overlook above Lake City and near the Slumgullion Pass summit. Note CO 149 in the lower left. There are reasons in the minds of some this is the most special road/ride in CO.
