+1 on Cafe Du Monde. Try to get a seat with a view of the street. While in the French Quarter, if you are facing the Church, take the street on the left side, mid block on the left is the Gumbo Spot. Give it a try. Great food. Wonderful atmosphere. There is also a place called the Gumbo Pot. Don't confuse the two. The Central Crocery has GREAT sandwiches.

+1 for Deanie's There is one in the French Quarter. I have never eaten there. The original is up on the lake. Good food.

The Coffee Pot for breakfast.

Felix's, Acme Oyster Bar

I am not sure about cheap, but.

I second the gumbo shop. Go to yo mamas and get a peanut butter bacon cheeseburger. Best burger ever!

Just got back from NOLA again last week. Yo Mama's is a must for a burger and some mac'n cheese. If you wand to try a variety of local food then the Jazz brunch at the court of two sisters with something like 200+ items. Staying on decateur u will find lots of good eats as well as the french market and the frenchman area

Another vote for Mothers and the debris and Ferdi Special.
We pass on Cafe DuMonde. Way too crowded. Seems like there's always a long line. If you want beignets to go from Cafe DuMonde then go around back. That's where the carry out window is. Still a line.
For beignets we prefer Cafe Beignet on Bourbon St. It's located at the rear of Legends Park. We've never had to wait in line more than 3 or 4 people. We like their beignets better than Cafe DuMonde. They're bigger and more volume to them. Also Cafe Beignet has the best carrot cake ever anywhere. There is usually someone playing entertainment at Cafe Beignet/Legends and you sit outside to people watch. There's another Cafe Beignet on Royal just a couple of blocks from the one on Bourbon if you want indoor seating.
A few others mentioned Central Grocery on Decatur St for muffuletta. They ain't lying! Fantastic. Lunch time is crowded and you'll have to wait. Hit it off-peak. We get one or if not hungry just a 1/2 which we split, get it to go, and sit on the steps at Jackson Square to people watch.
We haven't eaten a Deanies in the FQ but have eaten at the one on the lake front. Haven't had anything bad there. Good stuff.
Crescent City Brewhaus was good. Good variety of beer and good food.
The only place we won't go back to eat is Landry's. Food was sub-quality, service was terrible, and overpriced. Other than Landry's we haven't found a bad place to eat in the FQ. Food, drinking, and entertainment is what the FQ is about. A place that doesn't do their best at any of those won't be in business long because there are so many other places to go.
Now thinking about the carrot cake and Central Grocery muffuletta I may have to make a trip south.

Headed down that way too in a few weeks. Not on the bike though. Always have a great time there. It is going to be hot.
Try the tobasco wings at the Chartres House Cafe.
Another vote for Yo Mamas, Central Deli and Acme Oyster.
At Acme the chargrilled oysters are a must. Not an oyster fan but these are great.
If you get outside the french quarter Parasol's in the garden district has the best roast beef po boy sandwiches. Just beware very messy.
To wash it all down try a hurricane from Jean Lafitte's we prefer them over the Pat O'Briens ones.
