Default First Road Trip

I am taking my first long distance (for me) road trip this weekend.

Gardner KS to Logansport IN. I will leave on Friday and return on Monday

Should be about 1200 total miles round trip.

Any tips? Advice?

Thanks

First time? Take a lot of breaks and hydrate often. Chap Stick and sunscreen are a must. Every time you stop for gas, take around 15 minutes to stretch and work out any kinks. You'll feel a lot better upon arrival, and won't dread the ride home as much. Pack rain gear also.

Have fun, and remember, it's the journey, not the destination. Don't be in such a hurry that you bypass a lot of great memories.

Can't say a whole lot more than what Danny said. Will add... take a map, try to pre-plan your gas stops and get yourself a bee sting kit. You might never need it... but you'll be damn happy you have it if you do. They're small and fit in a tool pouch fork bag or pocket.

Oh... and chew gum.

don't over pack to the point that the bike is awkward to ride. i think they covered what you need, except i didn't see rain gear on that list just in case, it also makes a good pillow for a rest stop bench.

Take an extra day....or two!

I find that if I have a lot of miles to knock down I do better getting a fairly early start (weather/lighting permitting) and get through a tank of gas before breakfast.
Another tank (or two) before lunch and the rest of the day is a breeze.

Personally, I've had my fill of riding after dark and in downpouring rain so I try to take advantage of good weather and daylight.

A bottle holder on your bike will provide enough water to keep you going from gas stop to gas stop to keep you hydrated.

I agree with the sun block.

Thanks guys. I never would have thought of a bee sting kit!

I just received my armored jacket and pants (which are water proof)

I have a new set of boots instead of my no ankle coverage ones I have now.

I just installed a new Garmin Zumo LM gps

Changed the stock seat for a tallboy seat.

My luggage will work for a back rest.

I am getting up really early. I like the suggestion about running a tank of gas and then getting breakfast. Run a few more then lunch.

It should take me 9 hours if I take my time.

Hope I am not a poser with all my gear and gadgets

Thanks again guys.

Since you are traveling thru several states, I'm assuming you are wearing a helmet. Consider wearing ear plugs, even just the cheap foam plugs. I was amazed at how much better I felt after a long road trip using ear plugs. I never realized how much wind and road noise tires you out.

Ear plugs are a great thing to use on a longer ride.

Eating light meals will help don't over eat. Trying to pass gas at 75 mph is tough.
