Default Hoover Dam Trip Question?

Last year, we went to D.C and had a lot of good suggestions from this forum. This year we are in the early stages of planning a trip to Hoover Dam. We will be leaving from South Mississippi. We have the map drawn by Map Quest, but we usually stray from that so we can enjoy the back roads and sites not usually on the radar. Probably go out towards the Amarillo/Albuquerque direction and head home on a southerly track, Phoenix/Tucson etc. We love the old western heritage and don't mind going on the unbeaten path. We've got plenty of time as we are retired, so time considerations are not a problem. Thanks in advance!!

When you're in Oatman...watch where you step. There's a place there, an old restaurant/general store sort of place that sells 'fried bread'. Try it.

PHX is a spralling city...kinda turning into LA.

maybe not so much fun and the I-10 corridor to Tucson is not much either- but for Pichaco Peak- site of the Westernmost civil War battle.

suggest that you think about 4 corners, mexican hat, monument valley, grand canyon and rt 66 between Williams and Kingman.

basically heading West paralleling I-40 to the North.

That is where i like to ride and where i take my out-of State Pals.

you'll see altitudes of 5000 to 7000 feet so cooler than PHX ( 1200')

return trip, think about heading for 93 s - turn off near Bagdad and you can ride through prescott, then up to sedona on 89A...if you want up to Flagstaff ( 89A is really nice on that piece), then East on lake mary road to 87, south to Payson and 260 East...head towards show low and keep heading East ( these are all stellar motorcycle roads)

local website cyclerides.com has a dayrides section and lotso maps and photos for various routes through AZ and nearby States.

Happy To provide detailed info for any riders heading to Northern AZ, just pm me.

4 corners area is beautiful. We went out west 2 summers ago. We did the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, then on to Vegas. After we left Vegas we went north into Utah to Zion National park then through Page and on to Monument Valley. Vegas to Zion to 4 corners was my favorite stretch aside from the mountains in Colorado. Pretty much anywhere you go in that area is a beautiful.

What time of year are you planning to go? The last time I rode to Hoover Dam, it was around 115°. Riding hwy 93 from Kingman down to the dam was like descending into hell. From June through September, it will be well over 100° every day in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. Just a heads up.

All of what the guys have said. Went through area two years in a row. Love the Sedona, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Jerome area and you would really enjoy going US 89 on both sides of the Grand Canyon. A real nice trip is doing a big circle and visit as many National Parks as you can in Arizona, California and Utah. Good luck on your trip, you'll love it.

Just this past October myself and 3 buddies (with wives) flew to Vegas and rented bikes.
Best Western has a Ride Rewards -Harley Premier membership that's free to join. You get first floor lodging, bike wash facilities and points towards future stays. On our trip we stayed in BW each night and had excellent lodging.
Daytime temps varied, depending on altitude but generally were in the mid 60's, which is a great temp for riding.
We had 3 mornings where there was frost on the seats, and the evening we came out of the mountains headed to Torrey, Utah there was snow along the road (temp was 38*)

We made a big loop:

Vegas:

Valley of Fire

Zion Nat. Park (overnight)"

Bryce Canyon

Torrey, Utah (overnight)

We took 24 to 95 to 261 and rode the Moki Dugway
http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/ut261.html

Monument Valley Navajo Reservation (overnight)

Grand Canyon (overnight)

then from Seligman we took old rt 66 back towards Vegas
(make sure to stop in Hackeberry and check out the general store.

Stopped at Hoover Dam:

Then back to Vegas:

Personally, I miss that 100F weather. On the flip side, Valley of Fire is not that hot now.
