Did they ever pave that road from Steamboat Springs, Colorado (Routt National Forest) through Medicine Bow National Forest (Wyoming) which ends up south of Rawlins/Saratoga?
TNB... The pavement north out of Steamboat Springs turns to dirt just north of Steamboat lake. The most direct paved approach continues to be 125 north out of Walden. That said, if extra time is present, and one rides for the road, ride west on U.S. 40 out of Steamboat to Craig, then north on CO 13 to Baggs WY, then east on lonely WY 70 towards Saratoga. Daaaang what a spectacular rider's road. Sweeping, hilly, scenic, lonely. Came across 4-5 H-D riders coming the other way this past July, and that was about it for its entire length...
If you go to Sheridan from Estes its only about a six hour ride, will probably be pretty hot the first week of July but after Sheridan head west on 14 through the bighorns to cool off then head toward Cody, from there Chief Joseph to beartooth and red lodge. Reverse it back to Cody and then head to the black hills. But if you have never been to Yellowstone don't pass it up it is worth the trip.
I like both. Colorado is spectacular. So are the areas described by dv102. Nice to have such decisions isn't it?
If you like, check out the Ride Report in my sig. It covers both to a degree.
On my way to Sturgis this year we came out of Rocky Mountain NP into Estes Park, from there heading north was dull, the most interesting things to see were roadkill. Eastern Wyoming is awful, western side is fantastic. Rockies are fantastic. From Estes Park i'd do as much Colorado and as little Wyoming as possible at first (until you've gone further west). Yellowstone and Tetons are something else though and if you can get onto Beartooth - do it.
I'm partial because I live in Grand Junction, but there are some awesome areas to ride here in the Western slope. Riding the Monument is great and Moab is only an 1.5 hours away. You can ride south on 50 from grand juntion to Ouray then on over to Silverton to Durango. I think there's no less than 5 national parks within 3 hours of here. I don't want to say where I live is any better than other places, but when it comes to riding...this area is great.
