we will be crossing paths!
I am heading out from Long Island the saturday before july 4, meandering out west, meeting the gf the next saturday in rapid city, then heading to Red Lodge (which will be home base) to meet a few people to do yellowstone and the tetons
What started as a 12 day trip is now ten. I like the look of hwy 40 and by-passing Calgary when it is so busy. Thanks for the help guys.
Any suggestions for a hotel in the Banff/Lake Louise area?
If you are going North from St. Mary, I would recommend crossing the border at the Waterton lakes border crossing, follow the 6 to highway 3. Then West on 3 about 12 miles, then North on 22. The 541 from Longview to Kananaskis gets you the #1 highway.
That would bypass Calgary, and put you through some scenic country, especially the 541.
Dave, I agree the Big Horns and Beartoothe are great rides. Did both two years ago coming home from Yellowstone on a guys trip. Everything north of that will be new to me.
Are you still riding the fire engine bike?
Y2kflr, are you and your friends doing the Red Lodge Rally?
Sgt slaughter, thanks for the tips on getting to 541. As of yesterday, our trip is now reversed directions so we can take in the Red Lodge Rally on the way home.

In that case, go Winnipeg to Edmonton via the 16, then across to Jasper. Follow the Icefields Parkway (93) to Lake Louise. Follow the 93 south to Elko BC., then east on 3 then south on the 6 near Pincher creek, Alberta. This will go right into St. Mary. Then take the Going to the Sun Road west.
Much nicer ride north if you turn off at St. Cloud and head up hwy10 to Detroit Lakes then take hwy59 north to hwy2 then into Crookston, Grand Forks, and I29 to the border.
My wife and me are planning to do the Rockies, from the Grand Canyon and zig zag our way to Glacier Park. Before getting there and after leaving, well its ?????????????
Sgt slaughter, thanks for all the help. Should be a great trip.
Streeter, lucky for us, we can hit I29 near Souix Falls. I know the big slab is boring, but we need to put on miles early to have time to slow down later.
Jack6hd, we did Rockies to Grand Canyon last year. Great trip except 40+ mph winds in Wyoming coming home. My wife was ready to take the bus home. Not fun.
Sounds like an awesome trip. Went to Sturgis area, after the rally, and did the Bighorn mts as an overnighter side trip. Area is spectacular, stunning views with lots of pull overs for taking pictures & switchbacks. Gas up before you head up mts, & keep your jackets, gloves close by. Temp. was about 85 at bottom and when we hit the plateau at 7800 ft, temp. was about 50 with a chilling wind. Should be fun & safe riding.
