Myself and two buds are Sturgis virgins. We are going to try to make it out the week before the rally this year and are thinking about staying in Rapid City.
Anyone care to recomend hotels in Rapid? We dont camp so hotel only please!
I personally would look in Deadwood or Spearfish. Could not recommend a hotel. Or maybe stay in Hill City or Keystone for couple days then head north to DW or SF. You can spend a lot of wasted riding time just getting to an area to ride. Just my 2 cents.

I can't specifically recommend any hotels in Rapid City, but lots of people stay there. It's a quick trip on the highway to Sturgis, and all the Black Hills riding is easily accessible. I would try to stay on the North end of town near Rapid City HD. Lots of hotels right off I-90 there.
Hill City is THE spot to stay. In the middle of the Hills, 45 minutes of great riding to Sturgis, Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, and plenty of rental cabins. Be forewarned though, better make your reservations now, I have relatives that run a vacation home business up there and the week of the rally is already booked.
One more thing, Like I said, we are going the week prior and its a two day ride for us. Is there much at the rally the week prior? Is it the whole week? The rally runs from the 5th to the 11th. Being a two day ride, should we ride out Sat JUL/27 and leave friday the 2ND?
We made reservations for the week prior at the Chief Motel in Custer. Best price I could find, about $104 per night. We have to check out on Sunday as that's when most motels are booking for the week of the Rally, and the prices like quadruple for the Rally.
We will be there from Mon to Sun to ride the area. Based on what I have been told, most of the vendors are there for the week prior, just not all the bikes although I hear its getting busier and busier the week prior............figure it won't be long before the price of lodging jumps for that week too. But we have our reservations set.

Somewhere I got some pics from BlackHills HD, there's a LOT of vendors onsite, it's frigging huge. Stopped in there on my way to Sturgis this year and spent three hours walking around their parking lot, checking out vendors. There was at least 6-8,000 bikes in their parking lot.
i ust booked Confort Inn in Rapid City.. you can use tripadvisor.com and search Sturgis or rapid city and see what hotels pop up.. im new to strugis too.. i couldn't believe that manny hotles in Rapid are already fully booked. i Plan to arrive week prior bike week and leave Wed during bike week. Don't want to be in traffic alot ... rather ride.. its going to be a great experience... 4 day drive to get there... do a Forum search "Sturgis" you'll get hit from previous threads for info... just keep reading.... and i'd say, if ure looking at a hotel rather than camping.... book it soon..prices increase as they fill up their rooms.. cheers.
I stayed at Best Western in Deadwood the past 2 years a week prior to Rally Week Highly Recommend it although am sure are other good places but this would be my choice if were going again this year .. Many Vendors are there a week prior, about the only things miss going a week early are the concerts and crowds ..
