I will be spending quite a bit of time in Forney Texas this year if everything goes my way.
I am not familiar with that area at all. Can any of the locals tell me what the riding is like in that area? I know it gets very hot there in the summer, but what are the winters like? How many months a year are good riding months? How far is it from Forney to good, rural scenic rides?
I'm 2 hours just east here in Louisiana. The hole area is pretty flat but google "Three Sisters" you won't be dissapointed. Just north into Oklahoma there is a great ride, The Talimena Trail, another great ride. Of course anywhere north of I-30 in Arkansas is wonderful. FT

East Texas has some nice, 2-lane day trip stuff through the Piney Woods toward Longview, Tyler and north and south from those towns. You'll find any of the FM (Farm to Market) roads to be good riding. If you see one heading in the direction you want to go, take it. You'll be surprised how heavily wooded that area is as well as the number of lakes out there. For a weekend ride, SE OK and the Talimena Trail over to Queen Wilamena State Park and Beavers Bend State Park are great destinations and easy to get to from the east side of the Metroplex. Of course you can't beat trips down to the Hill Country which is southwest of you. Do a search on this forum and there's no end to the amount of info you'll get on the Hill Country.
As for winters, this isn't AZ by a long shot...but still decent riding. Lots of winter days with highs in the 50's and 60's with occasional shots of 70's. Summers can be grim with heat and humidity, but I found I got used to it when I lived there although some never do. Besides, in the summer many Texans head for Texas' favorite state park, Colorado. I predict you'll enjoy your time in Texas....a very interesting, active, diverse and fun place.
Thanks to both of you, it was very helpful. I plan to be there on and off with work most of this year and it is possible that if things work out, I could move there.
I have been looking to get out of IL for several years and this is an opportunity to do so.
I moved from Missouri to Texas back in 68. Was in Sherman and thought I didn't move far enough south so took a transfer to California. Big mistake. The state is fine it's the people and traffic I didn't care for. Took me 25 years to worm a transfer out of there back to Texas and here I'll stay. The only thing I don't like here is the number of roads that suddenly turn to dirt and gravel. But you can pretty much ride year round here. When it does snow or ice up it doesn't last that long. I've not ridden that much in east Texas but what I have is some nice country. If you ever get west of the metro-plex and are headed toward Wichita Falls give me a yell. I'm in Bowie.

hogcowboy, that's some fine riding out of Bowie (BOO-ee for the Il poster) as well. Rode over to Archer City for the McMurtry and Last Picture Show fame...Anarene. Of course few folks reading this are old enough to remember that book/film. Great Texas ranch country out that way with minimal traffic. Reminds me Texas has such a rich historical heritage that's interesting to read about and then plan a ride that way, especially for a newcomer.
Forney is just east of Dallas, I live in McKinney. There are enough interesting places to go on day rides and tons of places for meet ups and events. Do a search for Strokers, seriously large biker bar that has lots of events and such. East Texas (1.5 hours east of Forney) has some nice "just go" rides. Nothing planned but just get out and see the country. Look me up when you are here and we can hit some spots.
