Default Road Atlas

Has anybody found a suitable replacement for the map that HOG puts out?

I got the one I have with my free year of HOG memebership back in 2008. But since I am not the membership type, I was looking for a replacement. On a recent road trip it was cool to layout a map and see the highlighted roads to make plans every night. Sometimes there is no replacement for paper. GPS good for navigation not so much for planning.

I like Mad Maps for motorcyle roads and trusty old Rand Mcnally. The only advantage of the Hog map is it shows you the Harley dealers.

I always travel with the Rand McNally atlas and then the more detailed McNally state maps. I do this because it's offen well, as long as I'm in Colorado I might as well do some Utah too.

The HOG atlas has little detail and does not show the best motorcycle roads. Their highlighted roads are just well known, that's it. As a resource for finding dealer's that's another story and helpful then. Hint, chop out the needed sections.

Another hint is while spending the winter nights here or on other forums and you read about some great road, highlight it on your atlas. Any road, any state. Five years from now you might find yourself going there. I have notes, highlighted routes, magazine articles and tank bag maps going back many years. Ya never know.

I like to use a map from each state. This way when I head out on a trip I take only the maps that I might need. I belong to AAA and on some maps i notice that not all roads are on there. The maps are larger on the print size.. If you have a gps there are files out there that you could up load in your gps for harley dealers. Just my 2 cents.

hope this helps

When I go on long trips on the SG I bring my old laminated truckers road atlas. Only problem is size. Its 16 x 13". Outside of that it works great cause I can add notes about stops along the way or whatever in grease pencil. It is very detailed in miles and the type of road, telling you whether its a 2 lane, interstate, goat trail, paved, non paved, closed for winter, etc.

Join AAA. I believe that they still produce the flip TripTix.... You get those and regular state and regional maps free. I need to check if they still do free route planning.

State Farm gives us 2 or 3 Rand McNally's a year. That and my GPS seems to be all I need.

I love the laminated trucker atlas for planning. Shows the 2 lane routes the trucks use (some may what to avoid these) which can be a nice ride depending on the amount of truck traffic.

For the actual trip I have an atlas that is normal 8.5x11 size that I put in a clear tank bag. This year I am thinking about finding a mount for my GPS and using that also. The "travel atlas" I picked up at Barnes and Noble in the travel section. Can't remember the makers name since I'm at work right now.

Thanks all. Mad maps is what I am looking for but DAYAM!!!! they are proud of them.

Just being lazy and wanting route suggestions without doing all of the home work. Like to call an audible or two when on a trip so that is what is nice about the HOG guide. Popular or not, the highlighted roads served as a starting point.

Also AAA is not an option for more reasons that I will go into here. Whole other thread!
