Default Philly to Boston

Hey everyone, I'm looking to take a weekend trip from Philly to Boston. I'd like to go in late May early June. Any suggestions on roads or things to check out while there? I'll be going with my wife and a few friends. We like historic landmarks and beer. Mainly beer, but history too. Thanks.

Philadelphia to Boston... I don`t think you could pick a more nerve wracking ride.
It would be tough to do it round trip in a weekend, and still have time (and energy) to do any sightseeing.

I suggest you make the trip in a car, and then decide if you really want to run this gauntlet on a bike.

For a "weekend trip", I'd have to agree with post #2 above. You ARE NOT going to enjoy traveling from Philly to Boston by bike if you do it "the i-95 way". A flat-out terrible ride.

Now, if you wanted to take several days, and head north out of Philly for Stroudsburg and Milford, cross over to NY around Pt. Jervis, take 209 towards Kingston, take 23 into Great Barrington, then look at Route 9 or Route 20 across Massachusetts into Boston that way, it would probably be a very enjoyable ride.

But up and back on 95? Forgeddaboutit….

pick a different destination or add a couple days so you don't have to run 95

I used to drive from Boston to the Philadelphia suburbs to see my parents many times a year, and that was in a car. I assure you there is nothing enjoyable about the ride. The fastest route involves the NJ Tpike, Tappen Zee Bridge, 684, 84 to the Mass Pike. The thought of doing it on my bike makes me queasy.

If you'd like a way to get off portions of the road, consider going up the Palisades along the Hudson (?) and take Rte 9 west to east thru southern MA - really nice road until you get to Worcester then it's a nightmare of poorly maked turns just trying to stay on 9. If you can bail and get on Rte 20 east into Boston, it's better. The Northeast Corridor is just a beast, people trying to get past each other with little regard for their fellow humans. Good luck...

Actually, if you just have two days to get from Philly to Boston and back, the most enjoyable way would probably be to take the Acela Express...

Beer. No one mentioned beer.
Sam Adams has a brewery tour that I went on last year. It was pretty interesting and got to sample the free beer. It's in Boston and easy to find.
I also agree with the other posts. Stay off rt 95, especially thru NY and western CT.
If you don't mind super slabs, NJ turnpike to Garden state Pkwy; across Tappen Zee br, then up Merritt Pkwy (rt15 I think) to rt 84, then to the MA turnpike.
Not a great ride, but it'll get you there.

This responder sounds suspiciously familiar. Hmmm...
The Harpoon brewery in South Boston is excellent. The entire Seaport area has nice places to enjoy a great beverage. Also, the hotels have underground garages that are safe(r) places to leave a bike. Good luck.
