Me and some friends are planning a cross state trip from Jacksonville to Panama city (or that vacinity) at he end of September.
We want to do the kind of trip where we have no hotel reservations, no exact destination, and no specific time to be there. We might decide halfway accross to head south, I don't know.
One thing is for sure, we are not getting on any interstate highways.
Anyone have any "must see"s, or "gotta check-out"s along that stretch of Florida?
I welcome all advice, helpful hints, or information that you guys are willing to pass along. Thanks in advance for anything you do pass along to me.
I'm thinking about doing the same thing near the end of september. But I'll be coming from Naples. My wife is going to be in Port Saint Joe for 3 weeks for school and am trying to decide whether or not I'm going to and make it up there to see her. Problem is, it's a long way up there for me and I only have the weekend. I'm not planning on taking any interstates either, so it would take me forever. But it sounds like a fun trip.
just an idea...you could travel to starke then head west and get to 27. take 27 to perry and get on 98 west. take the pan handle (98) all the way to p.c. nice route, scenic. again, just an idea
just go into Google maps and search for "attractions". As you move the map balloons will pop up with info about the various attractions in the area covered by the map. Some good, some not so good. I have traveled the area you are talking about extensively and for me the major draw for that area of the state is awesome scenery and very little traffic. If you wanted to head a touch south on your journey I can hook you up with some of the best riding roads in the state here around Ocala. Hell, I will even give you a guided tour. Not really a lot of "must see/do" things until you get into the panhandle, but a very nice trip all the same! Follow Murph's advice and you can't go wrong.

gotastreetglide--you can take 90 all the way across to Pensacola if you want or you can head south on 77 or 79 to PC. Great little towns along the way and you can also head off to Georgia towns. FBCJOSH--I would go up on 19 or the expressway throuh crystal river then up 19 to Perry--left on 98 and along the coast. great ride and the 98 part takes you through great towns and right into st. joe. make sure you don't miss Appilatchcola (SP) one way or the other.

Apalachicola is pretty cool also. Visit both, but stop at Apalachicola first...then ask for directions. LOL
Check out the Air Force Armament Museum near Ft Walton Beach. Also on return trip from Panama City you could take rte 231 up to Hwy 20 riding back through pine forests. A nice quiet 2 lane alternative to I-10. Between rte 20 & 98 you'll get a sense of FL history.
