Waterfalls BRP
I'm taking a "bucket list trip" in June from Front Royal to Knoxville. I know many of you have done this route. Does anyone know the mile markers or approximate locations of some nice waterfalls?? Scenic outlooks etc?
Try this site for the park map and some other info. There is a place here that you can send for a milemarker by milemarker map of the BRP. http://www.nps.gov/blri/index.htm
Try this one just a few miles off the BRP. Exit for Rt.56 east appx. mm 30. Crabtree Falls is said to be the highest falls east of the Mississippi. Tough hike to the top.
Sherando Lake, mm 16 has some nice camping, good showers and swimming. (state campground)

check out Stone Mountain State Park in N.C......its where state road 21 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway......park in the lot for the lower falls and climb up.....or....go to the lot for the upper falls and hike/climb down......from the upper falls lot its about a mile hike up to the top of the falls.....200 ft drop falls.....viewing platform there and you can go down the stairs to the bottom.......just be sure you can climb back up!.........
21 is also the road Fox Creek Leathers is on.....its close by and worth a trip.....

I've ridden 64 from Brevard to Murphy several times and it's always great. The ride down the Parkway from Grandfather Mountain to Cherokee is spectacular. There are so many great rides in that area -- I hope you are able to spend at least a couple of days down there because it's hard to find a bad road anywhere around.
As I said, 64 is great. Looking Glass Falls is on 276 in Brevard just a couple of miles off 64. Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls and Cullesaja Falls very close together on 64 just west of Highlands, NC -- maybe 2-3 miles or so outside of town. You can either take 64 west all the way to Murphy or cut across Wayah Road just west of Franklin and take it by Nantahala Lake and catch 74 right around Nantahala Outdoor Center. Of course, the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway are in the area as well.
Here are a couple of my rides with pics:

And here is another website that has info on the NC Waterfall Byway.
Lastly, I'll second Fox Creek Leather in Independence, VA. They are only about 20 minutes from my house and I've bought several items from them and all have been top notch quality. In fact, I need to go see them again and get a smaller vest since my New Years resolution diet has worked.

Stone Mountain Park does have a great climb and beautiful waterfalls - I grew up not far from there. But if you want some twists & turns, ride Rt 58 from Independence to Damascus. First it seems like just a peaceful country ride along New River until you make the turn toward Damascus and Whitetop. From there expect some great twisties and fantastic views.
That's where we go on our annual customer appreciation ride. Went the first weekend in October a couple years ago, and rode through snow on the way up! (going in September this year
)
If you are in the mood for a hike, stop in at Grayson Highlands State Park. Gorgeous overlooks, waterfalls and wild ponies all in a fairly easy one-hour+/- hike. And Rt 58 takes you right by the park.
