Default Skyline/BRP help needed

Hey guys. I am planning a trip from NJ to the Skyline/BRP at the end of the month. I am riding and my buddy is driving his car (bringing family with him). I figure we can make the first day to include our trip to Front Royal and finish the Skyline. Where is a decent town to stop in on the first night? I was hoping to make it to Roanoke the first day but it is gonna be 11 hrs without stops so we are gonna have to stop sooner. What is decent between Front Royal and Roanoke? He will also need a pet friendly hotel. Thanks

The Skyline Drive (105 miles/35 MPH speed limit) ends at Waynesboro, VA and this is also where the BRP begins.

Waynesboro has a good selection of motels but not sure about pets.

You can start here:

Best Western Waynesboro--540-942-1100
Days Inn Waynesboro--943-1101
Hampton Inn--540-213-9500
Residence Inn--540-943-7426

More info at 540-942-6644

Having done Skyline/BRP for the last two years I would say that don't plan on doing Skyline in one day. The weather will play a big part in your trip.

Most all of the Hampton Inn's accept pets and there are numerous along the way as Skyline runs parallel to the Interstate. We stayed in one at Hillsville, Va last year.

Sounds like a great plan road trip, make sure to stop in Maggie Valley, NC and visit Wheels Thru Time.

Better tell your buddy to bring lots of Dramamine. I can't imagine doing any of that from the back seat of a car.

Fwiw, we did DC to Roanoke in a day and didn't really feel we were pushing it. But, we do it a little differently than a lot of folks. The Holiday Inn Express in Roanoke is nice fyi.

I would either stay in Front Royal & do SLD next morning or if your making good time stop in Waynesboro. Skyline can be done easily in one day - we went from Front Royal to Mt Airy, NC in one day ~320 miles Would not do it again but we were with a group & that was how it played out.

FWIW, there's a H-D dealer (Shenandoah H-D, Ph.# 540-213-RIDE) located in Staunton, VA, which is about 14 miles from Waynesboro.

As has already been stated, the weather on both the SLD and the BRP can be a huge factor in not only sight-seeing, but also for safety and driving time.
The last time we did the SLD, it took us 5.5 hours to do the 105 miles!
Rain, wind, fog, lots of loose gravel and lots of deer who didn't seem to be afraid of motorcycles.
It was so foggy at one point that I inadvertently rode into a pull-off thinking I was still on the road and my wife lost my taillight!

I'd suggest that you take the weather into consideration in Front Royal and if it's rainy or foggy that you consider taking the freeway from there to Waynesboro and hope for better weather for the following day.

Take pics and be sure to let us know how your trip goes.
