Seriously, there are a number of fires burning in Colorado right now. If you are planning a route through the state you might want to check with fire condition websites. Highway 160 from Wolf Creek Pass to South Fork is closed. The highway from South Fork to Creede is also closed...South Fork has been evacuated. This is some of the best riding in Colorado so plan accordingly. If the East Peak Fire (Spanish Peaks) continues unabated it could mean that I-25 might be also affected. Hwy 12, one of my favorite rides, may also be affected soon.
I'm leaving Phoenix tomorrow morning, headed for Estes Park. My route was going to take me over Wolf Creek Pass on Sunday. Not now.
You can come through Farmington, NM and on to Chama and go over Cumbres Pass into Alamosa. Not quite as nice a ride as Wolf Creek but from Chama on it is nice.
Are you doing this in one day? Heres and alternate to avoid all the smoke: North from Durango to Montrose, east over Monarch and northeast to Fairplay/Bailey...down to Denver. Or you can come into Estes the back way through the Park this way: Fairplay - Breckenride-Loveland Pass - I 70 to Empire - Berthoud Pass - Granby - Grand Lake - Rocky Park - Estes.
I spent last night in Cortez and am spending tonight in Canon City. I detoured at Pagosa Springs into NM and then back into CO and went over La Manga Pass. I was really looking forward to Wolf Creek, but the route I ended up taking was very nice.
I could see a huge plume of smoke in the mountains west of Alamosa, and had to ride through some of it for about 30 miles. It was very windy today and the smoke really spread. I saw two other smaller fires along the way.
The ride from Lake City to Creede today was one very smokey ride with a raging fire (Papoose Fire) around .5 mile to the west for roughly 7 to 8 miles. Creede was vacant. SJ Ron
