Default GPS Question

I have an older Garmin Nuvi 1100 and an iphone with google maps. I am going on a long trip I will need maps on. I never use GPS as most of the time I know my way around but will definitely need this on this trip. IS there a way to load my map into either of these units for the trip? If so how might I do this? I consider myself tech savvy but never have done the GPS thing.

Thank you. No, I don't have the cash to get the Harley GPS right now. I guess I could get the GPS and scratch the trip itself but I'd rather get lost and be out on the road.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think you can build your route on google maps on your computer and then save it (save it on google maps, not to your computer). Then go to google maps on your iphone and open your saved maps and follow it from there.

But, remember that if you do not have cell reception, your mapping function on your cell phone will not work.

Unless things have changed this feature only works with a Garmin Zumo GPS. If you sync with a different GPS is saves each desitination as a different route, which can be a nightmare, cause you have to write down on a piece of paper each route along the way..

A work around is to use Harley Maps or Google Map and create your entire route, then zoom in an print an area that covers each day of riding. Buy one of these http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...ap-Pocket.aspx or the T-BAG version and lay map over your tank. Then just program your GPS to next town or whatever using points off the map. So, you have a paper map and a GPS for use. This is how my trip to Sturgis was planned last year using an old Tom Tom GPS.

Your Garmin Nuvi will not support custom routes. I would suggest picking up a used Garmin off of craigslist that supports custom routes and then just load it on that.

If you look up the specs for a Garmin the custom route feature is just listed as "Routes" on the specs and then will give you a number that corresponds with how many routes you can have loaded on the device at one time.

I was able to go this route and picked up a Nuvi 750 off of CL for $25.

You can always just buy a newer GPS. Mine is a Garmin NUVI 1590LTM. paid $145.00 at Walmart and it will do custom routes and you can update newer maps. (LTM = lifetime Traffic and Maps update). With a holder and cable to hardwire it to the bike I'm still under $200.00.

Do a search on loading custom goggle maps onto Garmin Gps. I have a Nuvi 1390 I think and I can create a custom map on goggle maps and load it directly into the Garmin on the computer. Cell phone without service isn't much use but worth a try with the Garmin. Mine was like $140 with lifetime maps. Have a great trip.

With google maps you dont need reception to travel but you do need it to initially load it. It cashes your route. But, if you stray too far off the route and you dont have reception your screwed.

Google maps has the best routing of anything Ive seen, pick a start and end point then drag the route where ever you want to go. The absolute stupidest thing about google maps is, when you bring up your saved route on your phone..........it disregards the custom route you chose and gets you there its own way. It would seem like such a small programing change to do it but they just wont. People have been asking for it for years.
