Awesome info for all you ride planners out there.
Note 2 - You old map users may not understand the ease of this, but hey, I like my technology.
OK, so I do a lot of riding. Like, wake up one morning, sex with the OL, then time to ride for the day. The military in me cant just jump on and go and get lost and chit... Just not my deal.
Anyways, when we go on our 400+ day rides, I like to go to google maps and plan a kicka$$ route and then print em out... NO MORE.
Getting caught in the rain proves to suck when you have paper directions. Now, I lean on my iPhone.
I was looking and looking for a good motorcycle GPS app that would allow me to create a route and then give me turn by turn directions. After about 20 or so apps, I have found an awesome one and wanted to share it.
Its called Navigon. Now, even Navigon couldn't do what I really wanted. I want to be able to create a route myself (click and drag way points in order to hit cool roads or whatever) and Google maps does it best.
Alright, so what I found was an executable file called RouteConverter (http://www.routeconverter.de).
Put that on your computer desktop. All ya gotta do is create your route with Google Maps, click the link and drag that to your desktop, then open it in RouteConverter. Cool? Now, save it as a Navigon URL and BAM! It can be emailed to your phone and opened using your iPhone Navigon App.
I start the route, plug it into my HK radio and then I have turn by turn directions through my speakers (or ear buds for yous guys that dont have a stereo system) and didnt have to spend money on a crazy expensive GPS Unit.
Last thing - Navigon is like $60 in the App Store..... OR if you have a Jailbroken phone with installous on it, you can get it for free... Of course, I would NEVER save that kind of money and do that........
Does the Navigon app have pre loaded routes and maps? Or does it use service and load data as you ride? Living in Europe I want to travel using this app, but not have to pay for roaming fee's outside of Germany...Would it still work with the roaming off setting?
Also could I download a route from www.bestbikingroads.com , open it from "routeconverter" and send it to my iphone? Lots of good routes on there.
Also is there a good waterproof case for the Iphone that would work with a mount? I currently have a ram mount.
