Default Illinois to Colorado

Leaving Illinois on July 25th. Heading to the southern part of Colorado. Going to take rt54 out then thru Dodge City Ks to Canon City Co. With all the fires down in the southern part with some rodes closed was wondering if maybe we ought to head for the northern part of Colorado. Would appreciate any help with fire information-rode closures. Thanks!!!

Well I saw Wolf Creek Pass is open and the incident web site for Colorado http://www.inciweb.org/state/6/# lists any roads affected if you click on the incident. Where past Canon City are you headed?

PERSONALLY-----------I wouldnt take 54 across. It made the top side of a list of the 10 most deadly highways in the US.Speeds are fast the road is narrow for the amount of traffic as well as it has lots of truck traffic.I was visiting a friend in Cimmiron Ks last winter and the the ambulance ran 6 times when I asked him about it he said it was a daily thing after the casino in Dodge city opened.

We are planning on going over to Gunnison and head south towards Pagosa Springs and then west towards Durango.

That should all be good. Wolf Creek pass is open and there are other ways to Gunnison through the springs anyway. Should be fine.
