Decided to ride about 600 miles away one day, spend the second day enjoying the area I was visiting, and ride 600 miles back the third day. It only rained twice. On the way there, and on the way back.
Best part of reading about bike adventures is that they come in all shapes and sizes.
I have to agree, many of my trips that are not planned turn out to be the most enjoyable. Put the map/gps away and pick a direction and go. Our rider group refers to these runs and "point and shoot" Always a memory to take with.
Left August 1 for a 6 day trip on my forty eight, with my little brother on a klr,and our cousin on his police harley, who by the way is disabled and has been in a wheelchair since 1999, and just recently built himself a trike. Stopped in west Yellowstone for a night, went thru the park, down thru tetons, spent three days in Jackson, Wyoming. Headed home. 1621 miles. Longest day was 375 miles. Perfect mileage per day I think, never felt rushed. First vacation I've ever had where I never thought about work, bills etc. So tired every night, but loved every minute of it.
Paraphrase? Went west until those things sticking up in the sky. Rode around in them for a few days. Rode further west through the sandbox until I could get a good taco. Spent a few days splitting lanes. Headed east through more sand, flatness and hills until I hit a big river. Rode north until they stopped drawling.
Friday, we traveled from northern Ohio to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls; no freeways. Saturday, back to the US and traveled along Lake Ontario to Seneca Falls for the night. The next day we did the Finger Lakes to Watkins Glen and wrapped up in Olean, NY. The weather was absolutely perfect. We only used a tank full of gas each day, 40/ 50/55 miles an hour. Stopped at local diners and had a riot. May, 2012, we did the big trip - Albuquerque, St. George, Grand Canyon, 6000 miles worth on our Ultra. Talk about worn out !!! Windstorms, 100 degrees each day, in hindsight, too hot for me. Being retired for a year now, we are up for nearly any trip.
After our trip to New Mexico, we stayed at home in Knoxville for three days doing yard work, loaded the bike and traveled to Milwaukee to see the museum and visit relatives. May was action packed!!
Aug 3 left for Sturgis arrived the 5th, spent 41/2 days hanging around , doing some ridin. On the 10th left Sturgis for Mammoth C.G in the NW corner of Yellowstone NP. Next morning north to Glacier NP ( Montana is beautiful country). Two days later got on US 2 in West Glacier and took that all the way to the Mackinaw Bridge, crossed the bridge, picked up 75 towards home in Grand Rapids, Mi. Total mi 4,546. (13 days)

Am thinking of doing the same kind of trip during Sturgis from Minnesota. Was accommodations hard to reserve? Did you camp or motel? What mileage per day were you doing? Thanks
