I usually stay in Gatlinburg as well, you can get very cheap lodging and the food selection is much better. Just don't get caught up in the tourist crap. I stay at the Royal townhouse, it's cheap and has great covered parking for your bike. It is a bit dated but clean, and you can walk anywhere in town easily. Plus the ride through the park is great to get to the dragon or you can go through Townsend..... or well there are too many options.
I've been looking also to head down from the north to Dragon area, and Townsend looks good, but will tag on to this to catch some more info, thanks. Guess depends on which direction you're coming from.
I guess I need to get out more or find a way to make more money. I thought the only negative about Fontanna village was the price I paid for one night's stay in a great cabin with ac, a king sized bed and a great bar and grill a few yards away.
I admit I got there at sundown and was up and gone at sunrise, the main lodge was closed so I didn't see much of it, but I thought it was great. I was even able to buy carry out beer within a mile which is very difficult to do in that area.
