Default Route 66 research source

I was doing research for myself and others on Route 66. I rode it last fall in hurry and would like to do it again running over some of the original remaining sections and through the small towns. When replying to a thread I noticed that the source maps on routing took up a lot of room for little gain in the conversation. They are required since there are a lot of decisions to be made over the choice of several alignments and surface choice (I'd like to avoid gravel). I also noticed comments in several threads mentioning "to avoid that segment completely" that referenced the same segment shown in pictures that looks like a bagger convention. I also noticed that about a third of the links are broken and some sites MIA.

I decided to create a post as a reference to contain the resources used for planning. My first round will be links to route maps mainly pre WWII but a few from the mid-50s during some of the 4-lane re-alignment. I would appreciate it if someone knows a better source than I have. And I think motels, diners, attractions and road surface conditions would be a big help. Not everyone survives road trips on granola bars, Paydays and RedBull.

What happened to the 2 lane Roue 66?

We will start in Chicago and head west to LA:

I know its Ogden Ave, I'll need to find a map of that.

Pre Joliet bypass:

then to Pontiac:

then Bloomington:

Springfield and south (Orginal 66 followed IL 4):

an Litchfield to Chain of Rocks:

Chain of Rocks

Default Missouri Route 66

Route 66 suffered a lot of update in place as the interstate overlayed the old road. I used a couple of old maps and a number of detail maps to find the old route through the smaller cities.

East to West:

and some of the Cities:

Lots of changes, old routes and gravel. Will need some help with local knowledge on rideability of the gravel sections of the old road. Some of the old maps are Arizona and New Mexico. Interesting State Highway signs before WWII.

East to West

and 1936

pre 1937

post 1937

1925?

Plenty of history on that old road.
3 of us rode it the summer of 2012 on the Arizona to Los Angeles section. Seligman, AZ has good people and some great stories if you get the time to hang around town.

Did you ride any of the old sections in the Mojave? I read a comment about avoiding the road through Amboy and I wondering why? The road looks paved on Google street view.
