Awesome riding in the Black Hills! But not a good time to enjoy it. I agree with the others when sayin go the week before. Roads, bars aren't so busy. It's frustrating riding anywhere near Sturgis during the rally. But definitely something to see.
...I like the idea of renting a house or cabin...
decided to stay for a Kid Rock Concert...got caught in a torrential downpour...still had about an hour ride back to their cabin in the blackest of a black forest. That's not my idea of fun...
LOL! My group rented a house in Custer, and 4-5 of them rode in for the ZZ Top concert Sunday night. Same story, got caught in serous rain, white-knuckle ride back, finally got back to house ~2 AM, miserably cold. Several of us had tickets for the Kid Rock concert next night, but instead of riding bikes in we all piled into the pickup cab of one of the group who had trailered his bike up. When the rains came, we had a comfortable ride home! <g>
I have stayed at "Rush No More" campground twice and I have no complaints. I will try to get in there this year too. I like that place, I'ts pretty quiet and seems like an older crowd. They have breakfast in the morn and a beer garden for the last one. "Da Bus" comes in and takes you into town and back so you can party safely. It works for me. My2c....

We stayed at Rush-No-More last year, and I agree. It's a great place to stay, good location near the interstate, but far enough from it that you don't see it or hear it. It's in the woods so you're protected from the winds a bit. I recommend it as well.
I rode out from NY with my son in 2010. 3 day ride. Stayed at Hog Heaven campground. Clean and quiet. Had most of our camping stuff shipped there via UPS. Went a few days early and did all the big attractions before the hoards of bikers showed up. Great riding, but if you really want to ride the area, go at some other time than the rally.
;We stayed at Shady Camp and did all our riding the week before the Rally; great Campground very clean and not too expensive. Has its own Bar and café and entertainment every night The "DA BUS" stops there every hour or so up until the wee hours so no need to ride into town. The Rally is certainly a eye opener but for me once was enough. I have never seen so many Bikes on trailers in my life. Its a real "LOOK AT ME " kind of place. Having said that I had a great time and met so great folk.

i read the first and last page and had to say, myself and two others rode up from FL with no plan on where to stay and we ended up at Elkview campgounds, 4 exits from Sturgis. This is not a party place but it was very nice. They have shuttle buses (and most places do) for cheap to go see concerts. I and a million say traffic sucks, but it comes from somewhere! If you want to ride into town don't be silly and ride at traffic times. We had no problems! Traffic is all part of the game. If you want to party stay at a party campground or hotel. We had a blast. As far as services, go to Harley if you want to spent money and wait! I had my oil and footboards changed (while I ate free brats and coffee from a local church doing their part),,, and all was free!!! Minus you have to purchase your own oil and filter. Tons of places. Oh and the campground was 25 a night or 160.00 the whole event and we arrived the thurs before and stayed till weds night. All my stress planning was simply the ride out and back. Just do it you'll love it!!
one of the things i have learned about riding in the black hills is, try to ride the roads in a clockwise direction, that way you're making right hand turns. if you have to make left turns you're going to do lots of waiting at stop signs.
