one of the things i have learned about riding in the black hills is, try to ride the roads in a clockwise direction, that way you're making right hand turns. if you have to make left turns you're going to do lots of waiting at stop signs.
Now that is a great tip, never been there but this is something I'll remember for when I do go!
I favor camping since it can be done for $23/night/person. I use Elk View campgrounds. Nice facilities, no reservations needed(a discount if you do), and very quiet campgrounds with the exception of I-90 traffic which is music to my ears.
Rides:
Devils Tower in Wyoming
Needles Highway
Iron Mountain Road(pigtail bridges)
Custer Park wildlife loop
Crazy Horse
Spearfish Canyon
Bad Lands
Vanoker Canyon
Places to see:
Deadwood
Wall
Custer
downtown Sturgis after 9 pm
Not worth it:
Mount Rushmore
Rapid City
Sturgis during the day(unless you're looking to buy stuff from vendors.
if you have never been to sturgis, mount rushmore is a must see. i like the lighting ceremony in the evening. they do a short film and a park ranger gives a presentation on the history of mt. rushmore.
I would say that Mt Rushmore is not worth paying to go see, but defiantly go see it because it's easily seen just riding. Needles highway has some good views of it.
Guess I will put this out there....... I have went out to sturgis twice, trailered both times. Yes I said trailered, my thought process was drive out in total comfort and not worry about weather and other issues, pull into rapid city unload and start riding, I am a fan of mt Rushmore it is an amazing site to see in my opinion and the needles is a must. The first time out was a week before the rally and two days into the beginning and for us it was great, the second time was during the rally not so great but still a good time........ Do what works for you

Last year I went on the back side of Rushmore, didn't pay any money, wasn't bothered by any of the nimrod tourist either.
Was quite nice! and a different prospective.
I read folks saying go for the riding "before" the rally starts...is there any reason to not stay past Rally and do the good riding "after" rally instead?
