Interesting thread with great information. Riding 1,200mi one way in a month. Staying at Custer State Park (Legion Lake) in a one bedroom housekeeping cabin that sleeps 5. $180 night. Looking forward to a great trip and many memories.
Being a morning person has its advantages. I rode out of camp ever day no later than 6:15. Rode an hour and had breakfast closer to my destination, and then pretty much had Needles Hwy., Iron Mtn. Road, etc. to myself. I would be heading back to Sturgis as the crowds were leaving. Hit camp around 3:00, nap for a couple of hours, and then party at night. Enjoy the scenery and roads without the traffic and people watch, listen to bands, and drink at night. It works if you can get up that early.

If you came on a gas station with a line just ride on to the next one. Most times we didn't wait at all, just don't run low so you HAVE to get it somwhere.
We stayed in Lead this year, which is right beside Deadwood and where I'm hoping to stay next year. The area is pretty centrally located, about 15 miles from Sturgis. If you go into Sturgis get there early afternoon around 3-4 and find a place to park off Lazelle in one of the free lots. Depending on the size of your group you may be able to park on the street but theres lots of free parking if not.
shhhhhhhh **** your giving up the secret to good times there.....plenty of time to sleep when your dead.....
Was going to miss this year, for the first time in many years and wait for the 75th. Until the band lineup was announced. ZZ Top. Lynyrd Skynyrd, and 1/2 million people who love to ride, not a bad place to be. Leaving San Antonio on the 31st. And hoping Harley has the '15 Roadglide unveiling.

saw zz top was playing and definitely has my interest. Harley is showing off the new 2015 road glide there according to a HD service manager waiting to buy one
I thought Harley stopped doing the unveils at Sturgis a couple of years ago? They do the unveils at the yearly conference now..
I have not been before so couldn't tell you. The service manager at a HD dealer told me they were. He is waiting to buy one. I asked where they were doing it and he didn't know.

I am not big on crowds but need to go at least once to say I did, bucket list kind of thing.
I was wanting to hit it during the rally 1 or 2 days and do the rides outside of the Rally. That being said, should we go before or after the Rally? Would be hitting it either the first 2 days, or the last 2 days. Don't really want to camp, don't want to pack that much stuff on our Dyna's.
My girl, best friend and his girl are heading west from Ajax, Ontario on Saturday, Aug. 2nd. We'll set up in Spearfish on Aug. 5th. We've got tickets for ZZ on the 6th.
Can anyone tell me how far west of Sturgis Da Bus runs? I'm assuming there's cabs, etc. running from Spearfish. Also I've read mixed reviews on Spearfish. Is there anyplace we should hit in the way of bars, restaurants on the night or 2 we might not want to ride into heart of the rally?
