Others have mentioned it but downtown Sturgis itself during the rally can be done in less than an hour, you know buy the T-Shirt, take your picture with all the bikes and beat it. The riding in the area is what is the attraction to me and that is best done before or after the crowds are there. I have stayed in Deadwood and Rapid City both, Deadwood puts you a little closer to the good riding and has plenty of restaurants. Unless you are going just to party, then before or after is better, there are plenty of vendors before the rally and heap plenty good deals on stuff after the rally. You can easily do 300 or so miles a day at the rally just hitting all of the sites.
You can run a little over on your service interval and the bike won't fall apart, just wait to do the service when you get home.

Lots of good information on here, Thanks to all that post. I'm making my first trip to Sturgis this year & going solo, after reading the posts, I've decided to bump up my departure date, leaving from Victoria BC, via the Anacortes boat on July 29, planning on taking Hwy 20 across & over to Spokane, Down through Yellowstone & across to Cody & on to Deadwood & Sturgis. If anyone else is heading in that direction, meeting new riders is always cool.

Amen Brother.

I'm all about the Sturgis experience and every motorcycle enthusiastic needs to experience Sturgis at least once in their life.
That is just one week that can't truly be described in words, it's something that needs to be experienced.

I've been to Daytona.
Sure the rally is fun, but it ain't Sturgis.

The Wife and I leave on Tuesday for a 9 day vacation in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and we will celebrate out 31st wedding anniversary in Deadwood.
We're looking forward to a great day of riding the Black Hills topped off with a fantastic Anniversary dinner at Jake's in Deadwood.

We chose this year to do the pre-Sturgis because we are primarily all about the riding, so as all the beautiful people are arriving the first weekend in August, we'll be waving to them on Hwy 90 heading East as we are heading back home.

Next year though, let's face it the 75 Anniversary of Sturgis only comes once and we'll be there, hopefully not waking up in an alley off Sturgis main Street smelling of beer and urine though

when riding dabus can you shuffle around on buses as you want? Like getting on in spearfish and ride to Sturgis then get on a different bus and ride to Deadwood and then back to Sturgis and back to Spearfish? Does it cost just I wristband price? Is it still $20 ?

We're currently finishing up our honeymoon and heading west tomorrow from Milwaukee. We will stop for a lookie in Sturgis but not too long. I wanna keep rollin and maybe see devils tower and keep striking as far west as possible. As the song goes "I've been away too long." And I miss -our- bed. Gotta be at work for the fifth. 😉

We did:
Newport OR
SF, CA
Disney Gr Calif (with daughter at the time - 11 yo)
Vegas (married at VOF)
North Rim Az
El Rancho in Gallup. NM
72 oz place in Alberqueque NM
NOLA
Margaritaville Beach Hotel
Graceland and Beale St
Milwaukee (drivetrain and museum) saw our rivet from last summer.

I'll see bout the 75th next year for the full enchilada. It'd be nice to are ZZ and the Cult but tick tock -- no time.

Have a blast to all attending. Ride safe.

Congratulations to you and your bride. I'd say you 2 have marked this occasion in grand style from your itinerary. Have a great ride back to BC and blast your horn when you come through Coeur d'Alene.
