I'll be accessing West Yellowstone from I90. I have two choices, route 191 up the Gallatin or 287 through the Madison. Is one a better ride than the other or are they both about the same?
Don't know how I missed that you specified I-90.. I'll blame it on eggnog..
I've never ridden that part of either route, but having done both Beartooth and Chief Joseph
this June, I'd recommend trying 191 just because it's more of a mountain route.
Done both that you listed. I really like 287stopping in Ennis to eat at the pharmacy/soda fountain. If ya do breakfast around 8 or so you might meet Doc Lossi. A real story having biscuits and gravy with him. Then south along the Madison River and by Earthquake lake. Good story there too. Down along Hebgen lake and into West. Great trip. Once in West talk to Curt at The Goldenwest Hotel, he's a biker and took great care of us. He'll even show ya around for a day or two if he isn't swamped. Party's in his shop were off the hook, great BBQ too. Have fun. Tell him I sent ya and said hi, he may hang up. Lol. EW.
Last summer I came out of YNP and rode 287 up through Ennis. I'm with ericw on recommending this road even down to that spot to eat in Ennis. Certainly nothing wrong with 191 through Big Sky, very scenic along the Gallatin River but you'll probably see more traffic. 287 is more open in a wide valley and the road was in super shape up to I-90.....nice mountain scenery, ranch country and higher speed sweepers. Quake Lake is a great little stop for geologic history. Heck, I'm old enough to remember when that event occurred. You won't be disappointed. Now 287 north of I-90 to US 12 had a crapload of construction but that may be ok by now.
I'll chime in just to confirm what Eric and Griz have said. Although both roads are pretty, 287 is my preference. Less traffic and I prefer the larger vistas. Riding along the Gallatin is great too, so you really can't go wrong. It might make some difference which direction you're coming from, what kind of roads you're going to see elsewhere along your ride, and what your schedule is like.
