Camping or Motel?

When I'm sightseeing I generally keep my miles to around 250 a day, allowing me to stop at the vistas and take in the scenery and snap a decent picture or two.

When I'm going somewhere I average about 400+ a day.

In looking at your planned route there is one place that I'm sure you would like to see that I would pass on. Yosemite.... while beautiful, is infested with humans and their cars, trailers, and motorhomes...

You have two rather boring slogs. One between Bishop and San Luis Obispo, the other between Red Bluff and Placerville.

What I would do.... and I will work up a map for you... eliminate Yosemite and take a ride around Lake Tahoe on my way south. Then make the miles down 395 and across to San Luis Obispo. Enjoy the Coast Hwy. and forget Eureka take 36 as planned but take the cut at Platina to Redding. From Redding depending on how much time is left perhaps run up to Burney and check out Burney Falls. If time is short pass on Burney falls and then head to Lassen National Park and ride through the park from Manzanita Lake and out the South entrance. Head to Lake Almanor and take 89 back to the interstate just West of Reno.

My Map - google map Then again it depends on what you really want to see....
2002flstc, the route looks good. I reversed Dblass route should time run short.

We will be laying out the miles about like you are talking, and start to lay out the overnights. Thanks for your help. I am sure this helps more than just Chuck and I.

Default Freebirdsride1 quick return

This is Freebirdsride1 return if time on the loop runs short. Pretty sure I got this right. Let me know what you think.

Default what to wear

As Chuck and I continue to plan, we need some more advice from the forum. We're familiar with New England s weather, but we need to know what to expect from what looks to be alot of change in climate, as we loop from Reno to Bakersfield - the loop that has been laid out in these posts. We plan on traveling with the soft bags out of the dressers we own here, as we'll be renting the same type of ride. It'll be early June, you see the loop, so what should we be sure to bring? Thanks again for all your help.

Do a google or yahoo search and type in "Average monthly weather Reno (or any other town or place)", then click on the weather.com link and it will show you graphs of the average high/low temps and precipitation for each month.

Yes but id go down to Morro Bay and then cross over to 58 at Santa Margarita. Nice place for a stop and the last bit of ocean on the 1 till you hit Pismo Beach.

Avenue of the Giants is really cool .Just rode it last fall. Golden Gate to Ft Bragg is a lot of up down and back. The coolest part is from the bridge up past Pt Reyes Station. It is a long 200 miles up the coast to Ft Bragg. Beautiful but slow riding as the road winds up ,back around and down . Next time we will only ride from Stewarts Point on Dry Creek Rd/Skaggs Springs Rd. A great travel book is Destination Highways Northern Calif. Tells you all you want to know.they rate the roads . We have all of them. Even in my own state of Washington I have traveled roads that these guys wrote about that I never knew existed. destinationhighways.com is their website.

The coast can be shrouded in fog one day sunny and clear next. We adapted our route depending on coastal weather.Hwy 1 to SLO is amazing. The weekends are crazy on this stretch.

At that time of year there will be no rain except a slight possibility in the northern part of the state. It will be very cold at night in the higher elevations.

I've lived here all my life, and never pack rain gear in summer. Likelihood of anything major is remote.

Thanks for your knowledge mrmarklin. Nothing like hearing from someone who has 'been there and done that' when it comes to planning. Thanks again, from both of us.
