Pismo beach is a cool place to stop. We stayed there one night. Would go back.

Ya could get a little thunder storm on the mountains, Heavy wet fog on the coast and rain north coast. Should have no real need for rain gear but pack it if going Fort Bragg north (great ride). Try not to do Tahoe or Moro Bay-Carmel on the weekend. June is better than July/August for fog on the coast but always a crap shoot. You could hit temps from 110 in the valley & desert to 30 in the mornings on the passes but probably not so extreme. Lived and rode here all my life. I am terrible with the map thing but would be glad to help anyway I can.

Thank you Blackness03 and soft02 for the input about Pismo. If we decide to change the route in that area, what do you think of this-33 and 166 off of 58

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/ed...8.kGjpiewZ233U

and then resuming the route we have north from the others on the forum? It may be easier just to come down from where we planned?

Thanks Oldhippie. Hope we meet you along the way. Your input is very appreciated. We'll bring the light rain gear, and layer from there for the cold or wet, probably skipping the leather, but... Using the liners from the tour pack and bags to just transfer to the rentals, so we'll see how it packs. Read some good posts about Pismo, but again, there is so much and just few days. Going to be the ride of our lifetime.

Getting closer to June. Chuck and I are trying to target our lodging, figuring 220-240 miles per day. Is this type of schedule possible on the weekend along the coast? We are looking at overnights near Monterey, then above Bodega Bay, and lastly near Scotia before we start to head back across.

Yes it is easily doable but would be much better on weekdays.

Thanks Oldhippie. Flying into Reno midweek just puts us on the coast for the Friday through Sunday. Weekends on that stretch not so good?

There will be crazy summer tourist traffic. The semi-locals will be out on the weekend along with normal vacationers. Narrow two lane with few places to pass along with sightseeing motorhomes and grandma makes for slow going. Still worth it but chill.

Moses:

I have loved reading this thread. My wife and I have also been planning an almost exact ride. We will be flying most likely into San Francisco and staying in Sonoma the first 3 nights. Mom wants to do a ballon ride in Napa Valley and then we will attend the NASCAR race at Sonoma. Monday we plan on starting south on the PCH all the way to LA. We will spend a day or two knocking around LA and the head for the mountains. We will hit Yosemite, Tahoe and Reno and back to SF. We have 16 days to do this loop so obviously we will be riding a lot less per day then you.

I think we are shipping our bike out there as its actually cheaper to ship my bike then it is to rent one for 15 days. Plus I am 6'3" and have customized my Ultra Limited to better fit my long legs so having my bike would be best. The only thing is the shipper wants to pick it up 3 weeks prior to my date and then deliver 3 weeks after we are done so I am without the bike for 6 weeks during prime riding time.

I respect your effort to plan routes. I need to do the same though I want to not assign time frames as I'd like this to be more organic.

My biggest issue at this point is how do I find enough room on my bagger to pack enough stuff. Has anyone every packed anything on top of their saddle bags?

I will eagerly continue to follow this thread and if I can contribute in any way let me know.

Oldhippie, thanks for the advice! Chuck and I have changed our flight schedule so that we will arrive on the coast by Tuesday, so that we will be riding that leg of the ride midweek rather than weekend. Now looking for basic clean consistent overnight lodging. Again, many thanks from both of us.
