Thank you all for the info. I have a plan to head north from Manistee and ride the southern shore of Lake Superior over to Ashland,WI. From there I am heading to Milwaukee via the scenic routes and Green Bay. I was thinking about taking the ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon and then back home.
Nice Best Western in Ashland, right on the lake. They have a restaurant and bar with outside deck facing the water. Pretty biker friendly.
Gotta go to Lambeau Field!! Make reservations to get the field/stadium tour, I didn't have time but I did get into their Hall of Fame and saw Super Bowl trophies #1 and #2, very, very cool. I would like to have seen the field, maybe next time. Again good BW right down the block from the field, with a decent bar.
Don't sweat the bridge at Mackinaw and the gratings, it is only one lane that has the grating. Move to the other lane and you are on a solid surface. My wife took similar pictures through the grates. Reminded me of when the Williamsburg Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan had the same open grates on the outer lanes. Just go with the wiggle!!! Nice bridge, it was on my list of things to see, that is what brought us to the Yooper. Mackinaw Island was a nice no ride day, if you have time for one.
You will get a better view of Niagra falls from the Canadian side. But riding though southern Ontario is not going to be too exciting. It's the most densely populated part of our country. So you'll see endless towns, cities, freeways, traffic.
In Ashland the Deepwater grill has good eats and some good home brew, it's on Main a block east of hwy 2 on the western end of main behing the BIA building.
If you're going to Ashland, I would suggest you make the run up to Bayfield. Bayfield is a great town on the lake that has an east coast seaport feeling. Lots of good places to eat and the gateway to the Apostle Islands.
From Grand Marais, MI to Munising there is a new county rd (58 i believe) that has gotten good reviews from riders. Muinising has the pictured rocks cruises or you can do a glass bottom boat tour over some old shipwrecks, Shipwrecktours.com.
From Grand Marais, MI to Munising there is a new county rd (58 i believe) that has gotten good reviews from riders. ... H-58 is an excellent ride on new pavement and well worth the time. It also offers fantastic scenic views of the Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior.

Was up there last year and while lost ended up on H58. Fantastic road, loved it. If you really want to return at Niagra, I suggest crossing into Canada at the Soo, then ride to Manitoulin Island and take the ferry over to Tobermory. Next just plot a course through southern Ontario, avoid anything near Toronto/Hamilton/Welland as it is mostly a giant parking lot of ignorant drivers. If you make it to Highway 3 along Lake Erie's north shore the ride to Niagra is great, lots of small towns and quiet roads.
Another upshot would be to go to Port Dover on Lake Erie, every Friday the 13, riders the town is closed to all traffic but riders, 100,000+ people show up for the one day event.
I'm from the 'Burgh and heading that way this summer too.....I have a brother in law living in Canton Mi. hooking up with him and some friends. Also planning a trip to the HD museum by way of the ferry across the lake.......will follow your post for ideas too......be and safe have fun
