You made a good decision in not coming last year. It rained every day from spring until the first week of August. We are hoping for better this year, so far, so good. Have a great time, stop at some of the local joints, and enjoy our old mountains.
Since you're "in the area", highly recommend you ride the
Dragon. There's a lot of great state highways, but 129 is
one of the best if you like curvy. I can't wait to go back!
have fun!
T.
we are hitting most or all the hot spots including 129. thx
i grew up in mckinney tx left in 86 went back last spring, man has things changed down their. still have family in van alstyne. loved going to strokers!! you got alott of better places around dallas to eat then in the smokies. the smokies do have nice places to eat just different i guess. but i think you will defenetly like the riding better. im sure you have done your planning on rides. their are no bad rodes around the smokies.as far as parking in gatlinburg you only have to pay once for all day and its yousally $10 or less. theirs a parking structure right beside smokie mountain hd dealership in gatlinburge plus others. do the loop through the park and do cades cove.their is even a back rode that leaves cades cove that ends on the dragon. have a great time and i hope to be back in dallas this year.
Cades Cove was the pits. I got stuck in that g'damned scenic loop for about 2 hours. Granted I went on a Saturday afternoon. If you go during a weekday you might have more luck. There was heavy traffic on the lone road that leads into Cades Cove that day also. I did get to see a black bear on the side of the road on my way there though so that was cool.
Looks like the weather is going to work out well for you! Low 70's last time I checked. I had actually thought about heading that way for a day or two myself this weekend.

I will have to agree on Cades Cove. Not a good weekend ride unless you do it early. Every time some poor unfortunate bear makes the mistake of showing itself, it get's picture mobbed and traffic often comes to a standstill. I have seen people actually get out of their cars and approach a female with cubs. Luckily for them she went the other way.
Still a nice scenic ride.
Gatlinburg can get pretty dang crowded on the weekends especially after schools let out for the summer.
