Default Upstate NY Route help

We have a group of 6-10 headed to Maine in August. I am looking for advice on how to get from Oneonta NY to Fort Ticonderoga to catch the ferry over to VT & then onto Maine.

Anyone familiar with that area can give us some recommendations we would appreciate it.

Thanks!!

The most direct way (and probably fastest) is 88 to 90 to Albany, and then up 87, but if you have the time, and wanna avoid the traffic of Albany, any of those north-south routes are fine ---- routes 30, 28, 8, 10 --- any of those. If I wanted to avoid Albany, I'd probably take 88 to 30 to 8.

28 to 8 to 9N. If you have the time take 28 up to 30 at Blue Mountain Lake and take in the Adirondack Museum. You then take that northern loop of 28 back down to 8, 9N.

Taking in the fort at Ticonderoga is neat and there are even older French and English forts up at Crown point. You can take a bridge across there. An even longer ferry is at Essex on 22 north of 9N.

There are no bad roads through the Adirondacks and Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid are worth visiting too. The oldest log cabin in America in on Grand Isle just north of Burlington, VT.

Ah, so many roads, so little time.

A somewhat less direct route would be 23 East out of Oneonta to 30 North. This section of 30 takes you thru the Schohaire Valley. Follow 30 N to Amsterdam, then 67 East to 50 & 9 North. That's how we go to Lake George. Beautiful scenery & fairly decent road conditions for upstate NY.

I'll second the suggestion for Rt.23 to 30 North.
Great riding!

Several Ferries to choose from once riding on 9N. Some 20 minutes, 35 minutes or an hour ride one way.

If you choose to ride on Route 7 and 9 in VT from NY...Please ride on VT 100 up North and VT 108 (No center stripe) between Stowe and Snuggler's Notch Ski Resorts.

Once in NH, Get on Route 112 (Lost River Rd. and Kamacaugus Highway) right across the state.

Never been in Maine so I cannot help you, Sorry.

All Beautiful Scenic Roads,

Thorey

Not sure if the ferry is a "must do" for you from Ticonderoga but there is a bridge in Crown Point not far N of Ticonderoga. Follow 9N/22 to 185 and cross into VT. I agree with DeafUltra on a suggested VT/NH route but it would be better to know how much time/where you are heading in ME (a good size state) etc. as we travel all of those states and a round trip could be done in three days or two weeks dependent. I am interested in the Oneonta advise as my wife wants to visit a friend there while we travel down to Great Sacandaga Lake this year. I have been on 30 and 28 and they are nice over to 9 to Ticonderoga. Are you planning on reaching the coast of Maine??

And DO NOT forget to stop at Ben And Jerry's on RT100. They have ice cream flavors there that you cannot get in any store.
