Default Mapping Routes

Nothing more embarrassing when your leading a group ride and you end up on a dirt/gravel road. I'm looking for a source, digital preferred, that will show dirt/gravel vs paved roads.

Ive been using, Tyre, Route converter with Google maps, Google Earth and Bing Maps. Ive tried all the different views. There are times when Google Earth wont provide a clear enough image in order to determine where or not its paved or dirt.

Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!

There is a preference you can set in Base Camp to avoid unpaved roads. It has taken me a while to learn but now I prefer to use Base Camp.

I have suggested to my group that I lead that perhaps they should fund me an extra week so I can preride the entire route to be certain things like this do not happen. And to also check for the best places to eat and make certain that gas is plentiful along the entire route. Plus I could learn where the construction is and reroute the trip ahead of time to avoid those areas.

So far the answer has been, we can handle a little gravel or a couple of U-turns without a problem! Can you imagine that? LOL

Been there done that. Led a ride last year into WV. We started up a road I got from MapGuest. Three miles in it went from two lanes to one and then turned in dirt and gravel one lane with a 300+ foot drop off in places. No place to turn around so we rode it for about 5 miles before it turned back to blacktop. One member of the group said when you say we will travel back roads you give it new meaning.

I think I've been on that road in WV. Missed the turn onto the highway, followed GPS to turn onto a "county road" and ended up in BFE--in the middle of a downpour, on a nice two lane that abruptly turned into a gravel road, that again abruptly turned into a rutted two-track with no place to turn around.

I still wonder what the locals thought when hearing/seeing a full-dresser street bike going down the two-track in front of their farms. Kept the gears down & revs up since there were some pretty steep hills back there & I didn't want to have to downshift in the middle of them.

I've told this story a few times, yet I still have a group that wants me to lead an iron-butt. Silly people will find out how lost I can get on Saturday--Virginia Beach to Tail of the Dragon & back again!
