Gonna leave in 3 days with 3 others to go to Lake Louise and Banff in the Canadian Rockies. We will leave from Central Ohio and ride pretty much directly there. Any advice on roads or routes not to miss? Will go thru Glacier on the way. Got 36,000 miles on my 2012 Road Glide and anxious not to miss any good scenery - figure I'll put another 6 or 7 thou on it in a little over 2 weeks. What say you?
Moraine Lake, which is not far from Lake Louise is spectacular on a sunny day.
Takakkaw Falls is a side trip not to far up the Trans Canada from Lake Louise is picturesque.
If you don,t mind heights, a ride to Golden B.C. to take the ski gondola up Kicking Horse mountain is cool and the road up to the parking lot is a good one.
There is also a ski lift you can ride at the Lake Louise ski area to the top.
If you have time the ride to Jasper is a must see.
There are two roads you can take from Banff to Lake Louise. One is the Icefields Parkway (4 lane) the other is the Bow Valley Parkway. I think it's the older of the two roads. It's a two lane with more curves and probably less traffic. It accesses the main highway (Icefields) just past Banff, at Castle Jcn and at Lake Louise. Something to think about.
We will ride north from central Ohio thru Michigan over the Mackinaw bridge and then west on Rt 2 thru Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana. Rt 2 goes thru Glacier National Park and then NW to Canada.
If you were going to enter Canada into Alberta, this is the route I like.
Take Hwy 17 off Hwy 98 in the USA
Cross at Chief Mountain border crossing
You will be on Hwy 6 in Canada, check out Waterton Lakes if it suits your fancy
Make your way north to Hwy 22
At Longview head west on Hwy 541 it turns into Hwy 40 and meanders along then spits you out on Hwy 1
Head west on Hwy 1 and take Hwy 93 to Jasper.
If you like mountains you should like this route. If you cross into British Columbia see if you can do that route in reverse on the way back to the USA.
