Well I never changed out just the mufflers...all you get is some noise. I had the entire exhaust system replaced with Rineharts. Pulling off the head pipes gets that nasty catalytic converter out and you get a cooler running bike and a performance boost.
...just cutting out the cat made a big difference. HD uses a metal sheet type cat material that is bonded to the header. I've read of guys drilling it out, but I can't see how they could get it all that way. Best to cut a window in the header and weld it back after removing the cat.
I've also ordered the 2" baffles and the packing sleeves from Fullsac, but haven't gotten those in yet.
Forgot to add that the bike runs a lot cooler with the cat removed...

Reason: added info.
Another vote for Fullsac baffles. If you have the coin the DX header and the TTS Mastertune rounds out the little mods nicely. I ordered both the 2'' and 2 1/4" baffles finally decided on the 2" . For me the 2 1/4" was a little too noisy. Then again I chose not to use any packing at all in the muffler.
