My 2014 CVO Limited has had electrical issues since I bought it back in 2014. It has killed three batteries and 4 different dealers cannot figure out what is the cause.
They have replaced the batteries saying it was a factory defect, replaced the regulator saying it was the regulator, they have supposedly checked out the charging system and said it is charging perfectly. Each time I leave the dealership three to four days later the bike doesn't start. The battery doesn't get charged enough to turn the motor over enough to start. Could this be the alternator even though the dealers test the charging system and say its perfect? The dealers are Danbury, ct, New Orleans, La, Palm beach, and Salt Lake City. I need help
If you can use a multi meter
put the meter in series with the + battery cable
and the + battery terminal put the meter on 10 amps
DC to start so you don"t blow the meter fuse.
take a reading if less than1amp put meter in 1000Ma scale take reading This all with bike OFF OFF
Lets us know what the readings are.
If the reading is above 100 Ma or so start pulling fuses 1 at a time till you see the reading go down. the one with the biggest drop will lead you to the problem. I would take a guess if your battery is going dead in 4 days there you will see 1-2 amp reading. when working correctly I guess the reading
to be down around 50Ma or less
I am sure I will be corrected on something here but this is how I would start Good Luck
harley corporate is sending an engineer to the dealer in palm Beach to check out the bike and try to find the problem. The 4 dealers that have not been able to find the issue all did a good job but no-one was willing to go beyond the normal testing. The engineer will be at the dealer within two weeks and hopefully they will go beyond the others who have failed. I'll keep everyone in the loop. Thanks for your help
There are no ad-ons on the bike. It only draws the battery while running. When the battery is fully charged it starts perfectly. Once down the road about 1,000 miles the battery is mostly dead. I have been charging another battery at night and switching them in the morning so I don't get stuck again.
Each time I leave the dealership three to four days later the bike doesn't start.
Usually these two statements would contradict each other. So, are you leaving the bike sitting for those 3 or 4 days, or are you starting it up every single day? Let it sit for a week and then measure the battery using a battery load tester along with a multimeter with the ground wire disconnected. If the battery is testing very low (or dead) then there is a leaky ground somewhere.
