Default Engine guard/crash bar

I took off my damaged black engine guard off of my 2021 CVO Limited and while attempting to install the new one ran into a strange situation. The engine guard has the top bolt and the bottom left and right. bolts. Anyway, I put the washer on the top bolt, threaded it through the tab, then the bolt just goes through the hole in the frame? The frame isn't threaded like on my friend's road glide, so the bolt just screws right into the frame. Has anyone installed a engine guard/crash bar and had just the hole and did they have t put a nut behind it in that tiny area? I can't believe Harley didn't make the frame threaded so the bolt threads into the frame like my friend's does on the road glide. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. .

So what was there when you took the damaged one off?

My '07 Road King CVO uses a nut and bolt. To help get the nut into the frame I used an off set box wrench. To hold the nut in the wrench I fold a little piece of paper over a couple of times and stuff the paper and nut together into the end of the wrench.

First, the top tab goes behind the unthreaded hole in the frame. Then the bolt goes through the frame hole, and threads into the top tab. Save the bottom two for last.

Yea, I've experienced that before with a Chinese engine guard copy. You have to put a nut behind the frame and it's fun getting the bolt started.

Think about it. There's a reason why the top tab is threaded. It's to eliminate the need for a nut. Insert the top tab behind the cross member below the steering neck. Loosely install the bolt with washer through the cross member into the top tab. Next, pivot the bottom of the guard into place to start the lower bolts. If the lower bolts are started before the top tab is inserted behind the cross member, the top tab will pivot up and end up outside of the cross member.
