Bought my 2007 FXDSE 110 last fall with 900 miles on it and no oil leaks. Now I have around 1900 miles and tonight while cleaning her up from riding this weekend I noticed a light oilly film coming from the bottom of the rear jug. I've read a bunch of things about this but these gaskets leaking and now there might be a new type of gasket, not sure what to do? What steps do I take? How long do I wait to get it looked @? How long does this type of thing take? ETC? I'm new to owning Harley Davison's and never had warrnty issues. I got the extended warrnty right away. Now WHAT?
Tell your service manager that you need this head gasket 16801-07B. It is issued only for warranty repair on head gaskets by HD. Also have them check to make sure your cylinder liner did not slip. They may know about the problem, and if they don't they will be advised by MoCo to check cyl. liner as well when they order the gasket. I had to wait a while for the gasket to come in. When it did, I had the bike fixed in a day. The only problem you may have is they'll initially order the gasket and when they tear down the engine, if there's anything else wrong, you'll be out of your ride until the other parts come in. Good luck and get on 'em ASAP, the sooner they get the parts the better.
Is it leaking at the cylinder base (cylinder o-ring)? OR Is it leaking at the top of the cylinder (head gasket)?
There are multiple gasket variations. The base gaskets are o-rings. Seating the cylinders and proper torquing (overall) are critical.
You can also use a Cometic gasket and fill the base grove for the o-ring (as outlined in Cometic instructions) if you wish to depart from HD o-rings.
Additionally, the head gaskets are in their third itteration . . . they are a composite material versus the first two versions of laminated gaskets. Again, with these torque specifactions (and quite possibly heat cycles) are critical.
Cant help on the dealer . . . but if your in SW PA . . . I know a great one!
Took my bike in and they got the parts ordered. They said somethig about an aluminum sleeve shiffiting and pinching the gasket. Said it takes about 3-4 days to get the parts in and only a day or less to fix the problem. They told me this should be the fix. I sure hope so.
