Coil. Coil. Coil. My original coil failed on the evo motor. I replaced it with a nice Chinese one. Few weeks later, fired up. One cylinder dropped out. I switched the plug wires, other cylinder now the one dropping out. Removed coil, tested it with my ohm meter. One hole dead. Hopped on my other bike(1982 BMW Airhead) and rode to the shop. Guy said, I can't just replace it. You might have left the key on. Why I otta....., I didn't jump the counter, he sold me a new Andrews 3 ohm(for e ign), for $20 off. Came home, installed, no more problem. Till now 4 months later. Cold, runs great, gets warm, 20 miles, start losing rear cylinder. Mind you, this is a 1976 Shovel with a '95 evo factory mill.
I pulled every wire off this bike and rewired everything(fused). Pretty simple.
New rectifier. Normal charging. Slap on a new(or a buddys) coil, and see if the issue resolves. Me, I have the new points plate here on the kitchen table. When the new quality USA made, 5 ohm coil arrives, I am going to points. I did order a new 3 ohm Harley OEM coil too. I will slap that one on first just for kicks. I got 17 years riding a shovel with points, and using a cigarette paper to set my timing. Never a problem. The fun never stops.
Pics please of the mods to put a Factory evo into yer '76 frame.
I have seen 'em before..just like to see how folks do it.
Only coils I have had problems with are Chiwanese stuff...
Old OEM...Still runnin 'em.
Course the oldest one is young at 1974!
Lots younger than me anyway!!!
So, would a 1976 FLH be considered "early" or "late". I just set the timing on it with the revs up high. I got the dot centered in the hole and it seems to run and start good.
