I'm chasing down a whining engine noise. I'll get the my cam and pinion gear measurements later but Can a breather gear causes a whining noise?
When pulling it all apart, with the cam removed, I couldn't turn the breather by hand. I had to pry it out with a screw driver. Once I got it out, and wiped it all down, it fits back in fairly snugly, but I can spin it by hand now. Could it have been causing the whining noise?? It is a metal breather.
my cam gear and pinion gear both measure in the green spec (over .105 pins), but the engine whines. I have an Andrews undersize cam gear. Should I press it on?
just getting around to revisiting this, and posted some comments in a thread in the engine mechanical forum. seems to be more traffic here.
The smaller pinion gear didn't really change the whining noise.
Some recent searches I've done showed that replacing the cam cover solved whining issues, so that's my next step.
I ordered a new cam cover, and should have it tomorrow. Today when I took the old cover off, I was surprised to see it was a side oil type cam cover. PN - 25218-70, with the drilled cam bushing. Why would this be on a end oil 1976 motor, and could it be the cause of my whining problems? What effect will a side oil cam cover have on a end oil motor?
New cam cover is the end oil type, and I should have it on tomorrow evening.
couple of things - you need to picture up the cam bushing looking rearward - the side hole
you need to turn the engine around and look for a side oil hole in the pinion - then look into the end of the pinion and see if it also has a hole in its end
the chassis might be 76 but the engine could be 1970 to 1972 - 74 inch shovel and it has the correct cam cover on it now
its been running for years like this you could end all of that putting the incorrect cam cover on it now
early cone shovels side oil 1966 to 1972 do in fact whine its the nature of the beast
years back you complained the breather did not turn nicely -- does it now and a -picture of its hole is necessary as well
The wear pattern on the cam bushing indicate its not sitting square with the camshaft. Internal wear on one half, and outer wear on the shoulder face on the opposite side.
