well, I got it fixed. I drilled a small hole as planned, and used a jeweler's screwdriver to reach in and push out on the release pin.

Pushed it outward maybe 1/8" and my key/**** assembly came right out.

Problem was the outer chrome collar had come unthreaded until it came totally off.

I guess this let the **** lift up just enough to screw up the cam positions. One of my backup ***** works fine; just have to order a new decal now...11 bucks from Surdyke.

I'd still like to know how that release pin is normally accessed and pulled when you want to pull the **** out.

Can't find any mention of it in my books. My twinkie's release is a button underneith the **** itself, much more accessible.

well, it took a LOT of digging, But I think I figured it out. It looks like with a pre-93 bike, you've got to pull off the outer fairing, then remove the instrument cluster, and then remove the radio...just to get to that release pin. I found a video on YouTube and the guy uses right-angle needle-nose pliers to pull on the pin, approaching it from the front of the bike and reaching through the inner fairing. You can see the tip of the pin in this picture.

apparently nothing ever attaches to it...it just sits there waiting for a mechanic to pull it with some pliers. I think drilling that hole for a jeweler's screwdriver was a much easier hack. I think I'll stick a small #4 black anodized screw in the hole and nobody will even know it's there.

Now I've got to figure out the tumblers, it only seems to want to lock in the ACC position. I realize I won't ever be able to lock the forks, unless I do the mod Tom did and upgrade to a 93 switch and top tree, and add a tab to the frame. I at least want to be able to lock the switch itself.

tumblers weren't keeping it from locking correctly; had to shim the collar-to-fairing spacing correctly. All is well once again.

glad you got it figured out - amazing how difficult little changes can make things!
