Default kick start install issue

1980 flhc 80" stock, while trying to install kick start.i put everything together following the manual.then i give it a trial run before hooking up the clutch cable.all is good.THEN when i hook up the cable the kickarm just ratchets without catching the gears.the clutch cable does not have alot of adjustment on to it.i did this 20 years ago with no issue at all.could the po have installed the wrong length cable? i never checked to see if the TO bearing would still spin thru the fill hole.it has the wafer style bearing.almost seems that when i install the clutch cable it puts to much pressure on TO bearing,IDK.what am i missing.thanks for any insight on my issue

Did you adjust the push rod adjusting screw on the clutch side? It sounds like it needs to be backed off.
