Default Hard bag seals

I scored a set of original saddlebags with mounts last week and I'm going to refinish them with new hardware and paint. On the top lip of the bag is a moulding or piece of rubber or something this is stapled on the upper edge. It slips onto that edge. I'm not talking about the seal that goes in the lid but on the edge of the bag all the way around. Does anyone know what it is and or what I can use to replace it with? Pulling the staples out will most likely ruin it and its painted anyway and I don't want that.

Sounds like you are describing chrome trim that came on some of the bags. If you don't want chrome trim...just remove it and fill the staple holes. If you do want chrome trim...you could probably get some plastic "chrome" door edge guard at a parts store to replace it.

Good idea tom, but that's not what I have. My trim fits over the edge and is stapled on both sides It is a piece of rubber with a slit in it that fits over the edge then stapled. Was just wondering if anyone ever seen that? Also my lids have a clasp that hooks on the top of the lid at the back and pulls down. The type on the pic you have is what I see on all bags but mine don't have that top chrome piece. I have searched all over the web and cant find what I have so I'm guess I'm forced to put that style on. Not cheap either $72 dollars a side from jp and vtwin. I know there is a groove in the underside edge of the lids for a rubber seal that will sit on top of the edge of the bag but I was hoping I could put something on it like I had as well.

thanks

Tom, further to this discussion. I ordered the hardware for the bags and its like the one you have pictured. The hardware I had though was different. Is there a template available or could you or anyone else give me some measurements as to where the new lock and latch on the top of the lid go. I don't want to start drilling holes and find out they are wrong.

The hardware I had was a hook and a clasp that pulled down at the back. Standard hardware on the front. The lock was incorporated with the clasp. I cant get that now so I have to go to the newer design like you have on yours. Problem is I have no idea where to put the lock on the lower and the top on the lid. Can you give me some measurements

Those are panhead bags...from your description of the stapled on seal they are 63-64...don't think I would start cutting on them, if they are in good shape you could get enough for them to buy some really nice shovel bags. I believe they also have a flat bottom so newer mounting brackets will not work with them. You can get reproduction hardware... OEM# 90957-64 lock 90961-63A Lock Plate 90964-63 Backing plate 90965-63 Rivet There are a couple of sets of NOS locks on ebay right now.

Well that is just cherry. I have already bought and paid for two sets of hardware and can't return the kits I looked all over the net to find hardware for these and no one knew what I was talking about let alone able to steer me to where I could find them. Just my luck. I used to be an auto body man so I'm going to have to improvise and make them work. I'm up here in Canada and don't have a lot to choose from when it comes to finding parts like this not to mention the BS we have to go through which customs and duties to get something up here.

Thanks for your help Tom
