That's a good point - the motor, frame and title all match. I doubt anyone at DMV would even know anything was wrong.

A New York State Trooper would....

Find an LEO to run the vin number with a G in it and see if it gets a hit...

Or better yet, go back to the seller and tell him he sold you a bike with bogus numbers, and get your money back....

Try NICB website...if it was ever reported stolen to an insurance company it should be listed... Run it both ways..... I doubt its stolen or restamped..It would be tough to find matching sequence numbers .... On my old shovel some of the numbers were poorly stamped had an 8 that looked like a 3...so many things could have happened...one that comes to mind it could have come a title free state.. If so most states request Vin verification... Could have been the inspector, trooper or notary misread the G as a C..... I know it happens as when i moved to florida ...The notary misread the Vin ... If the Vin # doesn't have a title history it raises a red flag for inspection.... There are legal ways around it .. But the DMV are aware of them and usually catch it...

I would just tag it and ride it...all I see is a clerical error... No need to fix something that don't need fixin... Ride on

There is no clerical error, the title matches the number on the frame.

The issue is that the number on the frame and engine are not the correct number/letter combination for that particular model motorcycle.

It may not be an issue now, but that is assuming that the computer system does not find the discrepancy.

What happens in the future when a VIN check by an LEO or DMV not only gives the owners info, but also gives what model the vehicle should be according to the VIN?

I stand corrected not a clerical problem...Now see where original poster states all vins match... But the 2nd digit is not the correct designator... And if thats correct...I dont see a problem at all...No one is going to know or care... Leo runs vin.. Shows status active to said owner ...No want= No issues.... Ride it

Therein lies the problem...you think the VIN check will only spit out the correct owner, and it may well do that now, but what about in the future when the VIN check gets more sophisticated and also checks that the model matches the VIN number?

It would suck to get caught up in that scenario at one of those motorcycle only checkpoints, where they make all bikes stop for inspection, and man, they check everything.

As others have mentioned, I wouldn't rock the boat since your numbers match. Vin starting with 6C should be on a 80in FXS.
Edit: I did see online where 6C was SR100 and 7G for the FXS 80 but that conflicts with an old chart I had here so I'm not sure now.
