I am about ready to pull down my shovel to install 2 new cylinders and pistons to try and take care of a smoking problem that has been troubling this bike for a few years now , mu concern is the lower end has never been touched it is not noisy but it is 40 years old there maybe 30 to 40k miles on it not sure if I should spend the money on it or not
thanks
Ron
Go as far as ya want or need to Ron
Just depends on how much your attatched to the machine,
Once ya get her apart will tell ya how loose the rods&flywheels are,
You'll either fix it yourself,
Pay a compentent shop for the work,
Or it'll end up a basket case,
If the bottom end is not making noise as you say,
You may be golden with the top rebuild

Bring the crank pin around to approx. the 5 o'clock position, and feel for any up/down movement on the male rod.
Excessive side/side per service manual specs needs to be checked as well.
We've witnessed Shovels many, many, years ago in need of a top end at that mileage, with the crank on the high side of service specs(alerted the customers) only to have deep noises in the engine after about 1500-2000 miles, which the now sealed-off top end, finished off the crank.
Not trying to scare or secure work, only sharing info, but happy to lend a hand if need be.
