OK..First is it a real Dyna?? does it say Dyna right onto it?
I have one that is Not a True Dyna-s and it needed to be wired in Backwards in order to work...I have been told over and over that if you wire a Dyna Backwards, it will fry it...This non-Dyna unit works just fine after being wired in and non functional, then wired backwards from the Directions...and functions...still to this day!!!
Also...There was a Model that had a Neutral start thing...I Don't think the '79 was it.
I think the '79 was just a single wire from the Neutral switch to the light on the dash..Looking...
Bike had points setup when I bought it but they were burnt up and didn't look good. I bought a brand new Dyna S from J&P. 12v white wire and white wire from ignition to one side of coil and the blue wire from ignition to other side of coil.
Neutral indicator bulb has an orange wire that connects to black wire from neutral switch and a white wire that connects to white wire from kill switch/starter button.

Between that and the Starter Realay we talked about...someone had been "rewiring" your Bike.
The two wire Neurtral switch should indeed pass 12v to the Starter button thru it whan Bike is in fact in neutral..Stock i believe said wire was Grey, But, Not believing yours to be stock..
Let's just say that 12v switched [from Keyswitch] should go thru neutral switch then on to handlebar Stop/Run switch then to starter Button on your handlebars....Assuming [Big Word] you have '73-'81 handlebar controls!!
Oh yeah, someone definitely had their hands in the wiring before me, so the decision to get a new harness and start over was an easy one for me. I'll check the Neutral wiring later today when I have a chance.
Let's Change that starter relay too then!
no sense ruining the OE starter button [switch] they are getting hard to come by, and the Aftermarket ones are ****!!
I did a couple of quick checks. I have 12v at the post with red wire all the time. I don't have power on the black wire with key on and I push the starter button. I have to permanently ground the relay by installing it under the battery tray.

That Ford relay is gonna ruin your OE starter button...it was not intended to fire that big bastard...Takes too much amperage!!!!
