1981 Superglide with electrical issue(s). I have replaced battery, voltage regulator and solenoid this season. When attempting to start the bike yesterday I pressed the start button, the bike would not start. After the start buttonwasreleased the bike getting turning over. The battery had to be disconected in order to stop the bike from cranking. The solenoid began smoking. Any ideas? Starter relay? Baffled 2 weeks before bike week in NH, please assist.

Philbpo I dont know if this is any help or not. I would pull the wire off of the starter first, and then work your way back from there.... unwire solenoid and try it, see if relay sticks...unwire relay and see if its the switch. With the starter unwired, you can check for voltage without taxing your whole electrical system. Good luck!
Another quick thought,,,what kinda shape is the starter relay in? Seem like you've got juice going through your system when it should not. Any chance of faulty starter button. Have you re-wired anything as of late....starter, solenoid, relay, voltage regulator.
