ok I tried to pry them out but all i ended up with was a couple busted knuckles. these springs are pretty stout. I feel like I could get them out this way with more leverage but no way i could get them back in without damaging the new head gasket.

If i pull the cam out obvious i could get them out and take a look at the lifters. I think to me from the top anyway that they look like more modern hydralic lifters, more like what is in my dyna.

i have a good job next week that will consume most of the week, then im going out of town so im not really sure when i can get back in the garage.

I would like to have everything ready for when i do get around to it. What if anything do I need to pull out the cam. gasket and seal or can it be reused.

Also, i have a curved wrench that will let me reach the head bols but i dont see anyway to get a torque wrench on there, so i could use some advise here.

fergerburger and johnjziz thanks for the help
do yall think pulling the cam in the next step

the rear head gasket was leaking a tiny amount of oily bubles when it got hot. When i was taking it apart i noticed that the 2 head bolts on the back were pretty loose and i thought maybe i should have just tighten them up and move on with it.

Anyway I am having fun learning about my new machine but am glad at the moment that i have other bikes to ride

JZ has more experience with shovels - but pullin the cam cover is very simple - I re-use cam cover gaskets if they come off clean - but they are cheap - you will have to collapse the front pushrods as well - maybe JZ has better ideas for you on gettin the pushrods out - but I would tear it down - get a good look at the lifters - get an idea of exactly what you have - I deal with a lot of cobbled up stuff - and knowing exactly what you are working with is a real plus - I'm not sure if those lifters will drop all the way out from the inside of the cam chest - they look short and may clear enough to get them out - the one looks damaged to me

what it seems to me you have at this point is a part evo lifter conversion part shove in some of the parts - that is what I am seeing with some of the lifters not all and that my friend is effed up for sure

if it were me and in my shop to not damage anything else that is not already - I would bolt cut that set of push rods out of the engine

reason - you should consider putting the motor back to the way it was originally designed, and not some nim rod who came up with a mixed bag of cross parts -

sure someone will be along to tell me he has 100,00 miles on that conversion and he goes back and forth to work every day at 100 miles per hour -- great NEXT

if you are jammed for cash I have used take out and new pushrods that would be correct -- BUT you need to picture up the parts so all can see what they did

the rollers on the lifters are different sizes and so are the rocker arms and the cam is different because of the rocker arm ratio -- you need to figure out what you have and what is broken because its not a complete conversion and wont work as a halfeee

need pictures - all the lifters side by side - the lifter block bottoms from the sides - the cam and any numbers or letters - and what is inside of the rocker boxes -- in pictures

what JZ says is certainly right - if a guy brought that motor to my shop I would go through all the jizz and catalog everything - including cam, pinion gear, breather gear, tappet block specs, lifter specs, etc etc - then based on what parts are serviceable, I would recommend a plan to get reliability and serviceability out of the setup - its like Forrest Gumps garage there - you never know what your gonna get when you open that cam chest - I think bolt cutters work for cutting those rods out - thats what they do with Evo non-adjustables when adding quickies

Just to clarify. I have 2 shovel head motors. The 2 different style rods and lifters in the pics are not on the same motor.

the stock looking rods lifters are on a motor that is not installed

the non stock rods lifters are on a second motor that is installed on the bike

I understand that - my guess is that the guy installed the pushrods and heads with the motor out of the frame - then installed the motor into the frame - pull it apart - post pics of the cam and lifters and breather - the cam chest is not complex - simple stuff - once you figure out what you have you can deal with it and avoid this problem in the future - right now - you cant do anything unless you get those pushrods out

... and keep posting! I'm getting ready to tear into my newly acquired shovel. And, like you, this is my first. So I'm watching and learning from afar...
