So I took some pictures of the speedometer. I don't believe it's original equipment. There's a sticker on it and says a two-to-one ratio. It doesn't look right it's probably not OEM and that's probably all my problemS. I also took a picture of the drive on the front wheel and there is no connector in the transmission for a transmission to support a speedometer, however it looks like somebody might have filled in the area and then ground it down or something I'll attach a picture to and take a look and let me know what you think. Maybe it's not the original transmission either...

Ok, so it's a 2-1 ratio aftermarket speedo head on currently on the bike. The 73-80 FXE's were a 1-1 ratio. So I looked at other model years speedo's and the 84 FXR has a 2-1 ratio front wheel drive oem 67127-84a so I found one that I believe is the same size width wise as my 77 1-1 ratio... the only difference now would be that the FXR drive is for a 19" wheel. I currently have a 21 0n the front. This should get me a lot closer to the correct speed though... I'll update when the new one is installed.....

73 up FXE's didn't use a trans driven speedo...they used a block off plate...part number 35606-73

Thanx Tom, I just thought it was weird that it looks as if someone welded it up and ground it down.. also not looking to utilize a trans drivin Speedo.. gonna try a later model FXR drive...

Later model FXR you mean EVO?
It's the same ratio, but goes on the right and it's built a little different, I think it goes deeper into the hub replacing a spacer

No it's definitely a Shovelhead FXR with left-hand-drive that's what the parts book calls for for that model 80-84... It's only 25 bucks so it's definitely worth the shot in the dark.... I will update once I get the part installed in all that...

its never going to be what you expect from a shovel head, they were not made by Harley in that time frame, Harley to rid themselves of the shovel they came out with the evo and fixed a 1000 things you will find owning a shovel that will have you ticked - get use to it

its like your dad giving you a brand new rambler American at age 17 your first car

Default Update

Finally got a chance to check the speedometer to the mile markers on the side of the road on the expressway down here. I did use the OEM one from an 84 FXR (aftermarket made for part number 67127 - 84a) it's not as deep so I had to get a quarter inch spacer to make up the difference works perfect and the axle seal is still in a good position. I went 8 Miles match to match and it wasn't even a tenth off so I guess you can swap these things around a little bit... 60 miles per hour is definitely The Sweet Spot for this one... One thing down and several more to go shocks are next.....

Don't do Progressives, they ride as hard as the stock junk does on a shovel.
